Default mk4 fiesta 1.25 starter problems

bird i know has just bought a '96 fiesta 1.25 with dodgey starting problems, makes a metal on metal type sound when starting, and 1 out of 4 times it wont turn over. ive said ill go an do the starter for her, but how likley is it to be the flywheel not the starter?! she said a garage told her it could be the flywheel, this may have been just try and get money out of her, but in theory its posible, although ive never heard of the ring gears rounding/snapping off.

how easy are these to work on aswell btw? starts on the back i assume?

only if people leave the starter motor to get worse then it will get costly if your lucky you might just get away with a starter motor
when you have removed it check the teeth on the flywheel

pretty sure they're on the front stu, i've got a feeling it's a bit of a arse though as it goes through the middle of the inlet..
