Agreed the problem is i doubt you will get off if you only have a survival and no qualifications at all unless you know someone. I'm a fully qualified spark and i still struggled. Unfortunatly its not what you know its who you know thats why the industry is full of chancers

I can also give anyone a website to trainign courses for production work where a job is pretty much guaranteed. Means working away at 10 modules first though which could take a while. Costs approx £1350 and you sit an exam after each course. Can sit exam at a work place or local college etc. Start on £32k ish. Within 18months can be 50k. Website is in my tally book so can get it tomorrow.

i am a welder but its never appealed to me . However my mate is always on them but i wouldnt say he earns a great amount more than me plus hes still single . mainly because of rig life.
For instance last year he was working in the north sea pulling about 200/ 250 a day i think.
At the same time i was working a night shift in bury st edmunds . 7x 12hr shifts and we were on 252 a shift (less 18% tax). and i got to see the girlfriend every night etc. In my trade ive found you can earn as good onshore

Ofcourse it depends a bit on what rig your at, some are pretty old and crappy..
Heres my favourite place of work, Sleipner A, norwegian Statoil rig. 14 years old but still nice:

BTW the site for the production courses is
http://www.cogent.emitrade.com/acata..._Series_7.html
Thats the list of courses you need. It may take a while to study through them all but good end result!
erm...
Rousties are the bottom rung of the drilling contractor. They basically do all the shitty jobs. They are responsible for unloading/loading the boat. They work with their deck foreman/roustie pusher and bank the loads each with radio contact etc. They do any painting/maintenance required when not much to do. They do chemical mixing for me when required
They will relieve the roughnecks up on the rig floor for t/lunch breaks. This lets them learn the next step up the ladder.
They also do shit like clean the t shack etc.
Turbo Terry
If you're a trained diver AND can weld then i guess there's a job out there for you! I think these days ROV's do most underwater work but of course you still need divers too. As far as i know the divers offshore get paid SHIT loads because of the environment etc! If you're trained up then you should consider it!
Baker P
Aye but you were working EVERY day and it was nightshift and you think its as good a deal?
I'm really not sure but i guess welders could get £50k for 2 on 2 off which sounds fine to me!

yes buy course and get the pack, study then sit at local college is best bet.
You'll start as a production tech or something like that.
BTW i think the courses are from a small company here in aberdeen. I'd give them a call if you have any Q's

Richard, there are a few different courses but the basic offshore survival course I did was Accredited by OPITO. This course is required for all the north sea platforms IIRC

What rung of the ladder is production tech? and what does the job entail roughly speaking?
Cheers again

my old man has done oil rigs, he narrowly avoided the piper alpha
disaster.
the money in Saudi was much better, he worked for petromin-mobil
i got to go to the red O (the o in mobil) which is a oasis in the saudi
dessert.
Nigeria was a pita he worked for Agip there.
used to go away for ages sometimes.
still he has all the trappings.
£500k house in chester and one in america he bought outright
+ a merc clk kompressor but hes still bleedin miserable

Lambchop.--dont remember typing the words GOOD DEAL mate .
I am not saying the night shift was a better deal , and yes we did 11hrs work. I am saying i got home most nights and at the end of the month i was pulling a similar wage 15oo a week or so , clear.
Which is good for me with a family .
I have settled down with a firm at the moment which i intend to stay with(kids etc). And they pay 16hr cis4 ,You get a van ,phone and travel time.
What is the average wage for a welder then off shore? I imagine its more but it must put some strain on a family life?
If your good at your job theres plenty of money to be earned on shore . Depends what your circumstances are. If i was single then i would probably give it a go.
turbo terry... I am a welder by trade (pipes) served my time as a boiler maker . The job above was for a mob called stainless services north east or something like that.
You probably gota start with agencys mate . Or send a few c.v to firms you know of. Ive generally phoned freinds and got a start.
in the past Ive always worked with good pipe fitters and it rubs off on you so sometimes i could take a job as a fitter or even a bit of basic plumbing so long as i get home everynight .

i simply questioned whether you thought it was a good deal

I'll bet your rigs are still in far better nick than ours. Some of them are shocking!

Offshore work rocks, when your off you get all your time to do what you want, when your working you get well looked after and the moneys good. just packing for my 2 months stint in indonesia doing seismic and surveying.

On the flip side if it all goes to rat then you can be up all hours only getting the required 8hrs off after 16hrs work rarely happens but it does
Still a great job though if that type of lifestyle suits you
