Very true Simon!

I wouldn't expect a Civic to have that reading and be running at all either!

But its fun to discuss

Nick stop beating Si up... I've posted a car that does exactly what your talking about

Besides a Civic is the car in question not some nasty eco-friendly thing

Where am I wrong ?

Based on the original question, there was no mention of a cat or bad
running let alone mixtures inside the cylinder next to the spark plug.

Most cars lambda is measured after the engine and before the cat.
At that measurement point NO petrol car will run at lambda 2.0

As you have stated, only TRUE gas analysers can measure lambda post cat
and these are never seen in your local garage or tuning house - I agree.

Ok then, what car runs lambda 2 pre cat normally ?

(other than overrun or other non load conditions)

What do you think stratified injection achieves?

Lean burn....

Alex - off to look for proof

Alex,

I understand what you are saying there but lean burn cars dont run that
lean pre cat and produce useful working power no matter what dispersal
technology is implemented.

If I am wrong then my tuning book I have is wrong too

Nick,

STFU until proof is given

Main injection takes place as the piston approaches top dead centre on the compression stroke, shortly before ignition. As seen in the above pictures, the concave-section piston concentrates more fuel around the spark plug, this allows successful ignition without misfire even when the air / fuel mixture is very lean. This explain why GDI can operate under fuel / air ratio of 1 : 40 under light load, which is even leaner than Lean Burn Engines. As a result, more complete burning is achieved.

I could also get some quotes from some real books - but they are upstairs at my desk rather where I am currently sitting.

That would be pre cat beacuse its talking about the injection side of things....

The Cat requires difrerent technology to deal with GDi engines.

What book is it your reading? Could it be out of date?

The book was written in 1988.

Its called Turbo and Supercharging written by Alan Allard.

So yes, it does pre date GDI.

I guess I cant be all knowledgable like Nick is

why do you have to have a dig at me? why not just accept that you are wrong with some grace?

i freely admit that you are far more knowledgeable than me on many things, as are many others (alex included). it's a fact of life and i am secure enough in mine to accept it

EDIT: ps, can i have my ladder back?

Speak for yourself, I am stressed

I am in another technical argument on another forum (non car).
That one makes PF look like a tame place.
