AiM Dash compatability with L8
Hi guys
Does anyone have any experience interfacing the above two?
For specific models, I was thinking the AiM Strada Datalogger and dash
Cheers

Good choice matey
I have liked the look of them a lot - they seem to be really well thought out. It would be helpful if it could be made to interface with the diagnositc socket - Marelli are listed, but not the specific ECU
Autronic Rocks - I wish I had more dough and time.

i got an aim in my racecar (resto section). it can connect to vehicles via :
- CAN bus (this bus have cars from 2000 onwards more or less)
- serial connection (like to yums ecu or to my T6 but NOT to the L8 or P8)
- conventional set of sensors (as for any gauge)
hope this helps,
michael

Thanks michael
So it cannot be made to interpolate data piggy backed from the original sensors then?
Thats a shame - that will rather increase the price of the little devil!

yes, the fact it cannot also read off the original sensors at the same time but needs another set of sensors bought and placed sucks...
i changed later down the road from P8 to pectel T6 which made hooking up the AIM dash a whole lot easier.

it can be connected to L8, although it's not straightforward.
you will need a converter to convert the pectel datastream output of the L8 to a serial datastream. this is built in to a pectel monitor, or rplab sell them separately for use with their monitor software.
i guess that the dash will not necessarily be compatible with that datastream though, but you can always convert it to another serial datastream (or CAN message) if you know the output format of the serial pectel datastream (SECS claims he knows this, rplab certainly know it - but whether either of them will tell you is another matter) and the input format required by the AiM
interesting little project

how does this work with CAN, as normally you need the database to know the message identifier etc? or is that built into the software and you just select the correct make/model/year of vehicle like most other units that plug into the ODB connector?

thanks again for u know what
to my knowledge the T6 will not do a CAN signal, and the AIM states in its documentation that for T6 u need to use a serial connection
software for AIM looks neat, doesnt it
foreignRS
its selectable in the software you can download from here:

JjCoDeX75,
I can link them for you.
I already have a protocol converter made for other uses but this could
easily be adapted to run the AiM dash via RS232.
Not expensive either. Ł50
You would be limited on data that could be supplied by the L8.
This converter is more than a voltage level translator as per the RPLABS
device that Nick mentions above.
It also has a micro processor to do the protocol stream translation.
PM me if you want to take this up.
Nick, Dont be a cock.
If you want test me on the subject then get your chum Nikola to pose me
a question about the protocol (via email).

Simon, I wasn't trying to be a cock i was trying to be helpful to JJ by informing him that i have read previously that you said that you know the protocol.
i couldn't give a rat's arse if you know or not. it's of no concern to me whatsoever.

I am sure this will start a huge war of words on this thread but here we go.......
The problem I have always had is that everyone says...
"yes this is a good idea" but no one puts their money where ther mouth is.
Developing products takes time and money and as I a have familiy and
car to support, I need to work so other stuff gets done as and when I get
the time.
This particular product partially exists already as another product I have
already developed (a pectel version secs monitor)
As I said above, it will take a little work and time to do but its not
something worth doing just for me to make a loss as after all I dont
have an AiM dash nor do I need one.
Now, as a project for a few friends its a different ball game.
If someone wants to buy a dash and give me their time and access to their
car then I think it would be a nice little job to do.
(please arrange it first dont just go out and get one)
If after all that, I can sell a few more then I will share any profit with
anyone who initiated the project.
Cant say fairer than that.

Hopefully people can leave their politics at the door on this one.
Si - that sounds fantastic mate. I havent got one of the AiMs at this stage, this is the research stage. But I am hugely keen to get one - they look great.
Let me save some pennies, and I will get hold of one, then if you are game - see if we can adapt your converter.
Thanks all
JJ

i have not understood for years why people buy the SECS monitor when the possibility for a pectel style one is there.
surely it's better to see what the ecu is actually reading and doing, rather than what it should be reading from the sensors?
it has sold well though , due to cost and availability over genuine pectel monitors i guess and the lack of knowledge about adding the datastream to chips in the past.
hopefully, JJ or somebody else will take you up on your excellent offer and get this developed

Mike stop being a cunt and try reading my post and understanding it in the context its written.
The price was an estimation of parts cost and I did state it would need
some additional work.
("easily adapted" was my statement in case you have trouble reading)
I didnt say it was on the shelf and ready to send out.

Nick, Always my personal critic as usual.
I designed the original monitor 7 years ago to work with ANY weber
ecu not just those who had pectel modded versions.
Also, not everyone wants to or could find a pectel monitor at a price thats
reasonable bearing in mind pectel monitors used to retail second hand at
Ł1000+ years ago if you could find one.
My design was a simple cheap approach that MANY people have used
and found useful. If you cant understand that then just do one.

Guys.....
Not wishing to be rude, but Take it outside eh?
In a nutshell, Si has offered to help with something that I need help with. Everything else is politics.
Si - If you fancy a crack at this, let me know, and I will make the AiM the next toy I buy

to my converter board.
Any details on what you have actually bought will be helpfull.
Also, you will obviously need your L8/P8 ECU to output the pectel stream
if not already done.
Once I have enough info, I will be able to sort something.

JjCoDeX75 sorry mate, i never meant any criticism of SECS. i hoped that i was helping you to find a solution in the beginning and then i had praised SECS for his offer of adapting his existing design to help you out.
if you feel any of my comments were unfair to him, then feel free to ask me to edit them, or have a mod edit them
SECS i never did think you were stupid i bought an s8 years ago and that was clearly not designed by a stupid person i'm not the first to say that i think that you have the ability to design some excellent products that would prove popular to ford enthusiasts and could bring some modern technology and gadgets to the scene to liven up the old dinosaurs a bit
i like the idea of what JJ is trying to do, and i would love to see it working with your help and expertise
