Default Tyre Tread??? Want to be legal for trip to Nurburg in Apr.

Hi,

Query over tyre tread depths for Germany.

I have tried googling up an answer but not having a lot of joy getting the right answer.

Does anyone know what the correct tyre tread depths are for Germany, France and Belgium?

TIA

I think if you're borderline you should be worrying more about grip on the ring itself rather than the foreign police... put new tyres on for going.

if you need to ask, you're probably too close. especially if you are considering doing some hard laps.

and the legal limit in germany is 1.6mm, but you are recomended to change at 2mm (3mm for wide tyres), and 4mm for winter tyres

Just to verify what Nick has already correctly stated;

Below is an extract from the site

http://www.delti.com/press/english/deltiP66.html

mytyres.co.uk supports a move towards a minimum legal tread depth of 3mm - instead of the current 1.6mm. This would outlaw the majority of part worn tyres on sale in the UK. Binder explains: "In Germany motorists have been made aware the superior performance of tyres with at least 3mm tread depth remaining, mainly because of differing driving conditions and weather. That means many people change tyres well before the legal limit. The cast-offs are often exported, some of them finding their way to Britain.

Given the above Silver, looks like you and I both better think about some new rubber to kick the limey arses of these clowns that we are going with PMSL!

Thanks to Nick for the 3 & 4mm answer. I had heard elsewhere that 3 & 4mm were from Germany, it now makes sense where they are applied.

I am not trying to scrimp on tyres, just wanted to know the law on limits.

Yoko AVS' on order ready for next month!!!

I do rather like the bluetack idea as i could make up some really radical tread patterns like motor bike tyres....perhaps JJ and SiB could do some nice drawings for me to follow???

You did understand the point that the 3-4mm is guidance, and not law then? The law remains at 1.6mm throughout Europe

Oh yes - Nicks reply codified my understanding on where the 3 & 4mm figures actually came from.

1.6mm across Europe, fact.

Still fitting news boots before we go though.

Thanks for help and replies (on both threads)
