Default Cossie rev counter gone beserk! (now fixed - many thanks)

I've noticed when I accelerate hard the rev counter sticks at about 2.5k and then jumps forward a bit, hits about 4.5k then wangs (is this a real word?) round to 7.5k and then goes beserk jumping around the redline. I always back off straight away so don't know what would happen if I kept my foot down.

At first I thought the clutch was slipping but it can't actually be doing 7.5k revs and its shoots up too quick. Any ideas what the smegs going on?

Ignition amplifier eathing issue is very likely... also likely to be interference entering the loom.

Check the plugs on your firewall, disconnect and reconnect, see how you get on.

Quite a commom problem. As Stu said try looking at the plugs on the firewall. I know people replace these completely.

Although when I had the problem it was infact the phase sensor which had packed up.

Also try and earth the engine direct to the battery with a earthing wire from an ampifier installation kit

if the engine does not pop and bang at the same time, then its just the connectors.

Did as suggested - cleaned up the earths and a few connectors (including the phase sensor connector which was pretty filthy) and now seems to have completely cleared it. Took it for a spin and was smooth as anything.

Many thanks to all who offerred advice
