Default BMW M3 E30 vs E36

Which is the better " Drivers " car do you think ?

I remember Sean Bicknell having his and then him saying how it taught him how to be a quicker driver as he had to make up for a lack of power , as there are quite a few E36 owners here which would make the better car to learn how to " Drive "

Taking a quick look on the Trader #

Cheapest E30 is 6K and on Vcar ......... Cheapest E36 3K and that is for what appears to be a looked after example but with High miles .

Is the E30 really worth double albeit with its Cult status ?

I used to have an E30 M3 years ago!

Great looks and even better handling BUT if you buy a standard example beware that this is a car from the eighties so relatively speaking it has quite a bit of bodyroll, the brakes aren't that good and it doesn't have that much power.

Having said that I'd have another everyday!

I've heard an awful lot of people say that the E30 M3 isn't massive fun as it doesn't have enough power mate!

May even have been Porkie that said this as didn't Sean Bicknell have one?

Here's the review of the E30 M3 from 5th Gear

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DaK7KhQADSs

Interesting to see how they compare to modern cars but then it's more about the driving experience rather than raw speed in the E30 M3

I think Lee also said that driving the M3 for a year helped him become a better driver , as to make up for the lack of power he developed better corner speed and was better on the brakes

an e30 m3 is seriously underpowered and doesnt have the go to match the show imo. 195 or 215 bhp evo models dont cut it these days although they do look better than the e36 and even though i have an e30 if i was buying an m3 id go for the e36.handles better with much more power.thats progress id considered cossie ing an e30 m3 but i wouldnt have been able to leave the house for the bmw purist lynchmobs

Proper old skool classic! Love them mate, and can imagine they are would be a riot on track to learn to drive in. As you said Deneo it isnt all abut raw power as most people think .

Been in one but never driven one and seemed like a right laugh.

some of the bmw purists on the site im on are truly blinkered and look on their cars as motoring perfection and unimprovable.if bmw designed it like that it must be the perfect way. they forget the cars are sometimes 20 years old and built to compromise budgets and things move on

E30 M3 for me my dad has one love it alot.

From what i've read E30 handles much better and has better thrills. E36 may have more power but it is quite a bit heavier there for decent power to weight ratio.

And fuzzy the E36 would not come close to handling aswell with out suspension work.

Dovboy could you tell me where he got the BBS LMS from my dad is looking for a set at the moment.

Stuff what the purists say its your decision.

If you're buying one, have a go in both and see which you like the feel of. There was an article in Autocar comparing an Evo Sports E30 to an E36 M3 - 2 guys, both preferred different. Steve Soper preferred the E36 as he said if he wanted to get up early for a drive he'd be wanting to go fast

Buy the E30 M3 and let me turbo convert it!

Last one made a reliable 330 bhp on stock internals

Latest S14 build in my workshop runs a GT30 and should be good for 450 bhp.

have owned both and E30 is better drivers car, but for a day to day driver, performance included the E36 is miles ahead inspite of what the so called experts all say.

I reckon the E30 M3 is one of the most over hyped cars, buy one and make up your own mind, I did and I sold it soon after.... my e36 would kick its arse in every respect apart from feedback from the steering but I can live with that.
