Default S2 Radiator......

What's the deal these days with Standard RST rads?

Are Ford rads good quality? Or have they gone to out-sourced crap (like they have with water pumps etc)?

I can get mine re-cored, but its over £100 and I thought about trying Ford.

Any other idea's for a source for decent radiators? I don't want to change to an Alloy rad really.

Mind if I ask why you don`t want an alloy Christian? I had Graham GRS make me an alloy one up, and it improved my car`s cooling when on the move drastically compared to previous Ford items!

Obviously I appreciate cost may well play a part Just curious really

Christian,

A ford dealer close to me had one Escort RS Turbo that'd had been on the shelf for years, £180 they wanted for it, old man knocked them down to £130 so they could shift it. You'll be lucky to find one, there's load's on e-bay, but more likely to be a pattern part.

Good luck m8

Not available from ford anymore apparently. They come up regularly on ebay. Or the recoring option. I had one done recently and pressure tested for £20!

Got mine recored at George's in Clapton it's now a tripple core and doesn't get anywhere near as warm as it did when it was a twin core, it's made me
EVEN MORE attractive to women as well.

Christian,
Why are you so set on the RS Turbo item? I seem to remember that these are actually smaller than the XR3i items, due to the fact that the RSTs have the original intercooler to the side of the radiator, whereas the XR3i ones are full size accross the front of the car?

Seeing as you have done away with the OE intercooler, is there not room to fit the bigger XR3i item with it's bigger size, won't it be more efficient as well?

I'm sure this is what Steven RW did on his car... .

Mike Rainbird, If fitting an XR3i item....would their be room for the boost hoses at one side...or either side?

Ive saw 2wd sapph intercoolers fitted (wider, but not as tall?) when people have done the twin cosworth cooler route.

Mike - Even though I do not have the original S2 Intercooler, the GRS Inlet and Outlet run right there, so the XR3i rad is a no-go without changing the intercooler too.

On every other car I have ever seen, an Alloy rad is a benefit, however, mine is one of the only RST's I have come across that doesn't over-heat, even those with Alloy rads seem to suffer. That's why I am inclined to go with what I know.

The only reason the end-tank came off, most probably, was due to pressure and that shouldn't happen if the system isn't pressurised.

Mine didn`t overheat either, and was sceptical about the benefits of an alloy item. In traffic temps were the same but once on the move they came down very quickly ( and were lower ) than my previous genuine Ford rad.. ( And yes my cooling system was in tip top order throughout )

I'd go with the re-core personally, at least you know its going to be a good quality core for that price.

Ive got a S2 rad in mine that was recored, you have a job to get the needle in the middle of the gauge when you drive about 10mph or faster, runs ridiculously cool

Christian - u need a COPPER core one. They are BETTER than alloy - it's simple Physics. I've used one from Radiator specialists - and it was a copper core, and superb. I too never have overhearing problems. BUT, they were 80 quid when i bought one! Email them.

Too late guys, thanks for your advice. The Copper-cored jobbie is on order and will be with me tomorrow.

Graham (GRS) made a very kind offer some time ago, thanks for that Graham, but I really don't want to change a combination that I know works.
