Default BMW 740 engine (1990 sort of age), what manual box?

Is there a readily available box that bolts up to it?

with an adapter anything will bolt up i know there was but it was a bit poo
doubt very much if the 6 banger will fit or be able to work with it

it's the 4.0 one rather than the 4.4 right?

Do you mean the E38 or the E32?

If you mean the E38, then the only chance you will have will be the box found in the 540i sport (six speed manual). Rare as rocking horse shit and priced to match

If you mean the E32, then you have to think the E34 5 series V8s. I dont know if they used a manual on those or not, but that is your starting point

E32/E34 engine mate, and either 7 or 5 series would be fine as a donor, I havnt actually got the engine yet.

I guess a better question would be to ask, did the bmw 1990 or so 4 litre v8 ever come with a manual box?

Ah, the plot thickens

How common are they in manual?

And is it the same box as used in anything else more common?

would still be getting over 40mpg aswell, and im sure the torque the thing chucked out would more than compensate for the lake of top end power compared to the V8. plus id imagine itd be a piece of piss to fit....

Alex, how hard are we talking?
970 block hard, or cooper reverse rims hard?

XrStu, no I can get discount on whole cars etc but engine would still be stupid amounts of money, and no chance of blagging one

I dont know much about the V8s used in the E32s, but I guess that they are variants of the M60 Engine? If so, then it will be the same as the E39 cars, as Alex says.

There are very few V8s of that vintage, most were either 6's and the odd V12 (I remember my 750 well!!!)

I am told that the Manual was an option on the very early E38s, but it was almost never chosen (given the type of car!) And even then, it may have only been available on the 728is

If you dont mind me asking. Why bother? The E32 740 is a bus (trust me, I have owned enough of the buggers E32 and E38!)

Drive it auto and be happy

e34 will be a 4.0 v8 and its called an M60

once you get to e39 era they are 4.4 and called a m62.

Hard is the word - they don't go wrong much so people tend not to break them for parts!

Anyone know if there is another box that fits? (im guessing no 6 speeder would bolt straight up to it?)
OR if the engine was commonly used anywhere else with a manual, like in germany or somewhere?

I would agree with this. I have had both variants - M60 and M62 in the E38.

The M60 is notorious for the Nikasil issue though Chip, so make sure you arent taking on more than you realise.

If it is M60, then as Alex says, the later 6 speed manual box is the one you want. And no...... you cant have mine!

JJ, cheers for the tip on the liners, probably make more sense going for a 3.5 lump TBH but i just fancied the V8 sound!

the 840 came with the manual yes, but, as chip says, it's not the sort of thing you'll find stacke up with the fords in a pile

get hold of mike brewer, he's an annoying coont but he might be able to get you one or even dominic littlewood

Does it have to be a 6 speed? The V8 was available with a 5 speed too.

I have a 740 engine on the shelf and two 6 speed boxes but am torn between the BMW V8 and the 4.5 TVR engine that's also on the shelf as a donkey for the project Firenza.

Martin, not bothered about 5 or 6 speeds, its just for a cheap and cheerful project, not even positive on the engine yet, as need to but the recipient car and measure up that it will fit relative easily (toyota hilux)

PS

Fucking typical that the "near impossible to get hold of 6 speed box" you have 2 of on the shelf

The BMW v8 is a big lump and also has a weird sump shape. For transplant purposes the earlier 4.0 is a better option as the ECU does not have the complex immobiliser that the later model have.

I wasnt planning on using the management TBH, was going to put in some spare aftermarket ive got laying about and a couple of sets of bike bodies.

Will have to get a tape measure into the bay of a hilux, dont suppose you have measurements for the width? (other directions shouldnt be a problem but would make it more of a project than i want if it doesnt fit between the struts)
