Default Knocking noise? No oil!

What could it be? horrible knocking noise, sounds like it's coming from where the cams are, as rpm increases, the knock increases in speed.

There was no oil in the car, took a few litres to fill it up.

What could it be?

big ends are knackered and no doubt the crank will need regrinding at the least

what car is it?

if its a top end rattle then it could be that the hydraulic tappets need filling with oil again, like a zetec for example

if its bottom end you may get away with new bearings and a crank polish, but budget for a regrind

to check for big ends, rev it to about 3krpm and lift off, it will rattle as it deaccelerates if its the big ends
