Default A challenge for the techies! How hot is your charge temp....

..... when leaving your compressor housing.

Got this question emailed to me by a mate who is trying to design a charge cooler for his M3 turbo.

Dude,

If I have ambient air @ 20degC going into my GT30 and it is at a 78% effeciency island on the compressor map at a pressure ratio of 2.5 (not 2.5bar), How hot will the air going into the intercooler be?

So i took up the challenge and using Van der Wals equation came up with the following answer.

149.6 degress centigrade.

I'm fairly sure this is right as it is pretty much the same figure my mate had already come to.

However, i am suprised how high it is. Has anyone ever measured their charge temps at the compressor out let?

i imagine one of the magazines has,for an intercooler test.

but tbh it's pretty irelevant surely? it doesn't matter what the temp is there,it is still going to need to be cooled.....or is it just out of curiosity?

sounds about right to me.

On my escos with a MD240R I saw temps as high as 124 deg C
at the turbine outlet.

Anything from 120-150 is the norm, boost and compressor type dependent.

So whats the average at the other side of the cooler say for

1 an escort cossie with standard cooler running grens 24psi t34 etc

2 same spec but ith 500 style cooler.

Also would water injection be a good upgrade or is it pointles if the cooler is doing its job

You need to buy the Performance Ford mag where they tested all the different intercoolers and gave the before and after temps. There is quite a difference between the types.... .

You only need WI IF the charge temps cannot be kept below 44 deg C flat out in fifth gear.... However, I would fit the biggest and best intercooler you could buy and only use WI as a last resort, as it loses power injecting water into the combustion process (just not as much as you would have lost if you allowed the charge temps to spiral above 50-60 deg.....).

I understand about the loss of power witht he WI but tbh i didnt realise that the act's were that highcming out the turbo and intercoolers were that efficient to knock 100 degrees c of the act's.

I might go for a pro alloy or radtec 500 style cooler and possibly water injection just for piece of mind. I dont mind loosing a bit of power if it makes the car less likely to let go
