metal head gaskets and jointing paste/compound

silly Question realy as i for 1 never coat my head gaskets with any jointing paste/or compounds but heard of a other doing so with metal head gasket they coat the head face only and not the block face ..i dont get it why

I can tell you that I once used a sealant gasket with my cometic multilayer once (because the guy that was helping me made me do it - he was the mechanic), and it didnt seal properly!!!!
I have a friend who used to work with a Nissan Touring Car style team. They used to use multilayer gaskets for racing, and each gasket would do around 4 races. These gaskets would always be sealed with paste between uses.
I guess that the guys that are using it are using old advice. Not uncommon in this profession. I can tell you that it is a complete waste of time in a dry-install gasket, and in my case had the opposite effect!
