How do I find out what Hard Drives I can run on my pc?!
Its a HP Pavillion 1490.uk and currently has two 120gb drives and I want to swap one of them out to a HUGE one (like 500gb).
In the Device Manager it lists Intel 82801EB Ultra ATA stroage controlers
would they run this drive?
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=454632
THANKS!!!

Thats an IDE controller, that disk is a SATA interface. Different connector. SATA is slowly replacing IDE. Most new PCs now are sata only. Some of the HP business models even have SATA CD/DVD-RW drives in them.
Cant find your pc model specs anywhere, you sure it's a 1490?
You need to get IDE drives if you havent got SATA connectors.
Keep a 120gb for your operating system, buy a new larger one for your data. Then if/when windows goes pear shaped, you can just format and reinstall windows without having to worry about getting your data off, as all you'll be losing is your windows partition/program files, stuff which you can easily reinstall.
redirect your my docs folder to the data drive too

have a look on the board itself to see if you can see any sata ports
They're L shaped connectors that can be either mounted like this (most likely) or mounted flat so the connector goes in sideways

I've got a Nexus CPU cooler on mine thats perfectly silent. Just make sure you know what socket your chip uses so you buy the right one
Could also be your graphics card fan that makes the racket, i replaced my CPU fan thinking thatd make it silent - ended up having to do the gfx card as well. PSU fans make a racket too, recent HP's have used temperature sensitive fans though that only spin on full speed/noise when your pc is under serious pasty. normal operation theyre pretty silent

should be alright mate, the standard AMD ones that come with the retail chips weigh a fucking ton. They'd make a great weapon...inside a sock or something

hmm so what socket?
![Surprised](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/bigcry.gif)
After a google it may actually be a socket 478, dpending on how old it is. only sure fire way is to take the cooler off and look at the code on the top of the chip, should say something like SL7B8 or similar. put the whole lot into google and see what it turns up. thats the easiest way generally.

are you thinking sisoft sandra/belarc? could be worth a shot but not sure if it tells you what socket. might tell you the proper code for the chip though, which you can bang into google

Any links to this Everest prog ?
Would try googling it but somehow think I would get a lot of info on mountains rather than a program

Show off
More like
Hardly think there anything to show off with an old single core procesor lol
Was looking at some dual cores today actually
But with the MB a 939 not AM2 would be wasting my money I suppose cos of the memory I can run, so in another couple of months would be looking to upgrade again.
So to go dual core at the mo I would really want a new MB and memory to
Oh well does what I want I spose
for NOW
lol
