Did your parents buy you a car....?
Hi all,
My parents bought my first car for me - It was a £800 Astra. At the time, I was at Uni and I didn't have a job.
Do you think it's ok for parents to buy cars for their children? or do you think, children should earn it for themselves..? So that they respect / value it more?

I was bought an E reg nova when I was 17, it was only about 3 years old.
But I wasnt spoilt, I had to pay back part of it when I started working and had to insure it myself too.
I think aslong as its not all given to you on a plate then its fine no matter what the item is.
Its the spoilt little fuckers that expect everything and apprechiate nothing that wind me up

in my experience, those that have cars bought for them either treat them like shit and crash them.....
or are whiny little fuckers who always get what they want..

Mine bought me my first car, a 1.6S Fiesta MK3. They paid for it, I paid all the running costs, tax, insurance. I would have been stuck otherwise so was grateful, but never took it for granted.
Anyone who does, deserves bugger all.

if you got rich parents then yep they should buy away!
hold on my dad is rich and he bought me a... nope hes tight,
seriously tho, bought my car and tax + insurance, had about £20 left that month, my dad wouldnt lend me £300 for the cat 1 alarm needed
told me its your responsibilty, if you cant afford it, then you can have it!
tho it cropped up when he wanted to buy another house a few years ago, asked me for some cash, and i reminded him , still loaned him the money tho

I bought my first car off my mother for a reasonable price, MK1 Fiesta 12 years ago, but they didn't help me out with running costs, insurance etc. I had to learn for myself that owning and running a car costs money and is a luxury. This made me appreciate the car much more, and i still have it!
It is harder now i think as insurance costs are higher for young drivers but if you can't afford the car/insurance then you shouldn't have it! Plain and simple.

had some running cost paid for by the folks at my own protest when i started driving. I dont like getting anything from my folks...even at christmas and birthdays. They still always sort me out though
I am always grateful for any gifts i get but i know some birds who have
been bought brand new pugs and clio's, thats fookin madness!!
I know one lad who's dad is very well-off and he has been bought a few cars, total dick, no responsibilty. He even pulled up once when he was about 19 in his dads Bentley (not insured or given permission) and he ragged the fook out of it. COCK!!!

i worked and bought my own at 17, it was a red mk2 fessie 957cc pop plus, great little car never let me down
I think on one side its good to buy your own car because you know its YOURS and YOU bought it with your own money, and then theres the respect thing creeping in there aswell but then i also think if the parents want to buy there kid a car and can afford it then why not?

Parents helped out towards cost of my first car a lovely burgandy 1.3 popular mk 4 escort, by lending me £150 towards it. i was then given a sierra by grandparents when they bought new, but had to pay bro half the value as was joint gift. still have that now (6 years on!!!!) but its going on sat as bought a newish mondeo off my dad for cheapish. so guess in a way still get a bit of a hand.

tbh im kind of lucky
my parents have bought most of my cars for me, insured, taxed etc and even help me towards repairs and mods
i have bought my own cars aswel when i was working, but now i carnt work due to ill health, they still help me out as i dont get a lot of cash anymore
they bought my first cossie, unfortuantly it ended upside down
i helped pay off the loan they got for it, and then they quite happily paid for the mods to do the cossie engine in my forst xr4x4
they still help me out now with the projects i have on, but i do buy stuff myself, i just have to save longer for it, hence my projects take a while to do
but im getting out of cars shortly once ive finished, as i carnt find the strength to do anything on them anymore,
so i need this car to be done rite with the rite bits
i always respect my cars, always have done, but also have nailed them aswell

Bought my 1st car myself (1981 1L Mini) but my Mum and Dad helped with the Insurance
I know of people who have had there cars bought for them and i do think that if you pay for it yourself then you appreciate it more.

Was offered by my dad to buy me a car at 17, mk6 fiesta or a 206 (his idea, not mine!) but I bought a mk5 one instead and insured it myself (that's what I'd wanted all along). Don't get me wrong, I wasn't being ungrateful, but I like to know if I crash it, or don't wash it or whatever...that it's entirely my loss.If someone else buys something for me, I never think it's entirely mine. I'd feel like I had to ask permission to run the miles up on it or something? I think he wanted to buy me one purely because when he was my age his parents weren't able to...but I said that's the very reason I should.
I'm really bad with accepting gifts from people and always feel like I owe them. I'm awful for it. I'm the same with uni, want to pay my own way in life as I do think it'll teach me a lot more than just passing the direct debit to my parents to pay everything. I said to dad if he wants to pay something for uni, put the money into a savings account and pay off some of my debts when I graduate, as it's something I really do think has to be done for myself. If I starve/end up living out in the snow I'll reconsider, but right now all is well

My old man got my first car, Mk Fiesta 1.1 on an E plate with XR2 pepperpots. Engine was shagged so being a mechanic he changed the lump.
Then, part ex'd it for a Mk 4 Escort 1.4L, then, when that reached the end of it's life the old man bought me an XR3i to fall in love with and stop me wanting an Escort RS Turbo. 2 years, and a bit of cash from my Nan for my 21st Birthday and RS Ownership bestowed me

My parents paid about 1/3 of my first car, I had to pay the rest.
And I do have respect for the car.
7 years old, still looks like it's fresh out of the showroom and it's the only car that we've kept for more than 2,5 years
