what exactly are 'reeds' in a 2 stroke engine
im just stripping down the engin ein my ts, its big bored and all that crap,
reason im stripping it is that its a bastid to turn over on the kick start, so you have to bump it,
any way, took head of, piston looks like some ones kurbed it heads got a few marks to,
when i was looking for a new pistond and rings, i cam acroos some carbonfibre reeds, wtf do they do,
i take it there the bits fitted to the bottom of the bore??
some one fill me in
thanks in advance guys

Its a one way valve as there arent any normal valves in a 2 stroker.
This is like thin plate on the inlet like a cat flap that prevents
the piston pushing the fuel air mixture back out the cylinder through the carb
but allows it to be sucked in.

oh cool,
so when is the need to uprate them
im running a larger carb, kand n, 7occ, big bore front system, straight through rear,
i just want the bastid thing to be reliable, so if i need to uprate them , i need to do it now whilst the engine is in my dish washer lmao

Too many posts.. I need a life!!
the reeds are inbetween the barrel and the inlet from the carb. they open and shut to let the air/fuel in. by fitting different reeds they can open and shut faster it will give bit better throttle response.

Try using non performance spark plugs, unless you are ragging the nuts of the engine at all times performance plugs will just keep fouling. Cheep plugs will last longer and make it much easier to start etc.
No need to upgrade the reeds imo, just make sure they are clean and closing fully or your engine will go bang !

:edit cos half my post got cut off:
Reed valves are the little flappy things that snap off and end up trashing your engine about a week after you buy your first bike.
As for your piston damage its Supposed to be like that, its a stroker. should burn oil at a rate of about 3 litres an hour. and leave a destroyer style blue cloud behind wherever you go. (i was kinda naive when i bought mine. least it was only 20 quid.)
Even if you do bolt it back together it probably will have no response and no torque with that pipe set up.
the vast majority of a 2 strokes power is dictated by the pipe design. not just the expansion chamber but the end pipe as well.
in the past ive seen people changing main jet and exhaust and completely changing the power characteristics and output of thier engines from just that.
not always for the better, if youre ragging a little traily around a small field a stroker with the power curve up around the 12187908 rpm mark is about as much use as a kick in the bollocks
best method is to seek advice from someone who has experience tuning your specific bike. see which is the best setup for your needs.
tuning 2 strokes is like tuning cars. more tuning speeds up the self destruction. only a stroker does it louder with more blue smoke
