Default Tough Day - RIP Thomas :(

Some people on here may know as well as a passion for Fords we also had a horse. My missus got into it all more seriously about 5 years ago and kinda like or not I was dragged into it all as well. Unfortunately the old fella was taken lame a few weeks back and he was saddly put down this morning.

Quite surprised quite how touched I was by him. Rachel is understandably gutted and I have to admit to being really quite upset by it all as well. Will really miss him

RIP big fella.

Really sorry for you both mate. Nicole and I went through this some time ago when she had to put her horse down and the pain it caused was tremendous. More for Nicole of course than I but I, like yourself, was also shocked the effect it had on me. Such a big proud creature, and such a terrible way to die...

Sorry guys.

I'm really sorry to hear this! He looked like a lovely horse! I love the head on "action shot" My family have had ponies & horses since I was a toddler and it was always so sad to have one put down. A couple of years back my sisters horse Archie went lame (he had some problem with his back which meant his back legs didnt always work properly) and she was so unhappy when he had to be put down.

Thats sad to hear, I've had mine for 10 years now, she's 27 and wasn't too well recently its awful to think that the time is getting nearer when perhaps she wont be around any more, upsets you more than you think.

He looked lovely, sure will be missed

I can fully appreciate just how you and your missus feel Oranoco

In June last year my missus's horse had to be put to sleep....... She'd had him for over 8 years, and he was still out and about competing in XC and Showjumping up until he died. The lady my missus bought the horse from had sold him as a 14year old, and so when he died we thought he was 22 (and a very fit and active 22).... however when we passed the news on to his former owner, she admitted that he was actually approx 4 years older than she had said This meant that he was fully active until he died at 26

We had the option of an operation, but as my missus is an Equine Nurse herself, and so our Vets are also friends of hers, they advised that we had to consider the quality of life that he may have after the operation - and so WE had to choose to have him put to sleep. We know we made the 'right' decision, but that was the hardest one we have EVER had to make.

Thats pretty good going to still be able to be used like he was at that age This certainly helped to ease the pain of him going!

Its probably the worst thing that either of us have ever had to deal with and it took many months before we sorted ourselves out and came to terms with it.

8 months on now and we have many photos of him up everywhere in the house and we're left with fond memories You will be left with the same in the future and nothing can take them away!

I used to ride a lot when I was younger...and the ex-showjumper I used to ride was 26 when I stopped.. and it was still so nuts that I was almost the only person daft enough to sit on (and for the most part fall off) it bar the instructors who'd ridden him for 10 years+ since they were my age.
Shocking how long some of them can go on for! He only died fairly recently aswell..

I couldn't have had my own...although the looking after it etc would have been fine (I was down the stables at 7am anyway, hardly as if the early mornings would have been a shock ) I really couldn't have coped with it dying..which eventually is inevitable. Especially if it was one that lives a good 15 years after you get it...far too much of a wimp for that, me.

OMG im SO sorry to read this hun, brings back some painful memories, i been there, my horse went lame, she got cusions disease, which im not sure if you know is the later stages of laminitis the vets were out to her every week kept telling me she was ok, then they ask me to consider having her put to sleep, was the hardest desicion ive ever had to make, and it broke me heart she was only 15...

I REALLY feel for you guys

Cheers people,

Rachel thanks all of you for your kind words.

Maria - We called the vet out and he concluded that he'd had what he could best describe to us as a sort of stroke. He did give it a long name but half the equine language seems foreign to me even though I try.

Really feel for you. What a handsome chap!!! Looks a real sweetie and has a kind eye

I lost both my horses. One was 17 and broke her leg and the other was 8 and had acute liver disease with stones in the liver, the biopsy and scans showed the liver was in a very bad way and after 8 painfull months i had to decide to have him put to sleep at 8 years old Very hard decision and one you don't live with too easily, but it's part and parcel of horse ownership.

I am buying a new horse this year, it's taken me 2 years to feel ok with getting another one, but it's in my blood and a way of life for me.

I know how your partner is feeling right now and my thoughts are with her. Such a devastating time Please pass on my condolences

R.I.P Big guy. He will be in very good company

I have sympathy mate, myself and my missus are into horses, her more than me, and knoiw how close you get to them with all the time (and £) spent on them, getting to know their quirks, talents etc etc.

There will be plenty of others out there mate. I know of a few for sale at the mo if your int. If you were looking, what would you be after?
