Default Roller bearing turbo?

Question....

What are the advantages of a roller bearing turbo over a standard turbo & would you notice a hugh amount of difference on spool up?

As I understand it, it depends on the size of the comprssor wheel. The bigger the wheel the more effect it will have on spooling up time.

Well, considering that a Ball-Bearing turbo is FAR more succeptible to surge, if it is spec'd wrongly, then that must prove that it will spool quicker.

I think so anyway, though there are others that say that is not the case.

Hi AJ

as standard the evo's have better turbos than the cossies anyway

with the GT turbos it all depends on spec gt28's are good for 400+ and spool up really quickly from as little as 2k rpm

my internal Gt30 spools up from about 3k in 1st gear just like my T34 with .63

i dont have any "sergio" taccini at all and kicks like a mule and twice as hard

Marco, I haven't seen a GT28 make over 400bhp on a 2.0 engine, has anyone got proven results for this?

AJ, that's normal for TME's!! LOL.

Also, the low-lag thing is more to do with the turbine housing design than anything else IMO.

Not a genuine GT28 tho, some mental T35 hybrid isnt it.

GT2871Rs are rated to 400 tho.

Hi Steve

I have not got a clue what it was , it was most defo gt28 front compressor and core but not sure of rear housing it made just over 400+ bhp on the dyno

There's also the GT2876R (aka Garrett GT25-40) thats good for 440bhp. I had one, people "say" its a mismatched turbo, big GT30 compressor and small T25 sized turbine but they seem to make decent results on SR20, RB's etc. It didn't suit my engine though, didn't even fit it, sold it and buying a GT3076R.

Tests have shown that ROLLER BEARING turbos have a much lower drag than floating bearing type.
They used on tests 200 watts of power to rotate at a given rpm, compared with 800 watts for a traditional floating bearing design at the same rpm.
So they have less drag, will therefore spool quicker as less force trying to keep them still, and influence their behaviour.
One of the other main benefits is they can be sealed a lot better/easier to prevent oil consumption.

ayyyyyyeeee
big difference between the roller bearing turbos and the ball bearing turbos..

roller bearing can be fixed, ball bearing turbo once they let go need a full chra in many cases, so usually very expensive to fix, close to the price of a new unit

There's a thread from an Australian guy Jake here on PF, who was making well over 400HP at the flywheel (475 off the top of my head)
Or are you talking 400 at the wheels?

Below is the link, he's managed an 11.3 second 1/4 mile also
