Eight arrested in anti-terror swoops
its happening on our door steps now
Eight terror suspects have been arrested in a series of early morning raids.
Police swooped on a number of addresses in Birmingham as part of a massive anti-terror operation led by the Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit.
Security sources said a major terror attack had been thwarted.
The plan, which was in its later stages, was a departure from recent al-Qaeda style bombings.
The sources said it appeared the alleged plan involved an Iraq-style kidnapping of a member of the public who would then be tortured and ultimately executed on video.
The raids in the Sparkhill area of Birmingham saw officers swoop on an anonymous end-of-terrace house, an Islamic bookshop and a cybercafe.
Dozens of officers are standing guard outside the three addresses as forensic experts worked inside the properties in the inner-city district.
A West Midlands Police spokeswoman said: "The arrests were part of a counter-terrorism operation co-ordinated and led by the Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit supported by officers from the West Midlands Police and Metropolitan Police.
"A number of addresses in Birmingham have been secured and sealed off and are currently being searched by officers from West Midlands Police and Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit.
"Whilst this operation poses no specific threat to the West Midlands, as a precautionary measure we will have an enhanced police presence at these locations.
"We would ask for the continued support and co-operation of the public. Our message to people living in the West Midlands is to remain vigilant. Public safety is our absolute priority."
The Home Office said Home Secretary John Reid had been fully briefed on what it described as a nationwide operation.
A spokeswoman said: "We can confirm that a major counter terrorism operation took place earlier today led by West Midlands Police.
"Eight arrests under the Terrorism Act have been made to date during this nationwide operation.
"The Home Secretary was fully briefed on the operation and is receiving regular updates as developments occur.
"This operation is a reminder of the real and serious nature of the terrorist threat we face."

and watch how many get released over the next few weeks.
The ringleader of the "airline plot" was released without charge a while ago. The only thing they could do him for was a minor fraud charge.

Gareth Peirce, solicitor for the two released men, said: "They have left the police station without any better understanding of why they were there than when they first arrived seven days ago.
"Not a word was ever mentioned to either of them about a plot to kidnap or the grisly suggestion of a beheading or even of a soldier at all."
Both the men had been met with a "consistent refusal" of an explanation for their arrest, Ms Peirce added.

One of the "innocent" wrongly-accused was on GMTV this morning Bleating about how badly the Police have treated him and how our justice system is SOOO unfair! - It's ok fella we'll just let you do what you like on our soil, we would hate to think we've offended you in any way!!
I still think if they were being investigated for so long AND got hauled in for something by the police, then they were hardly "model" citizens in the first place, not what you'd call a "pillar" of the community
Any money these lot will be in line for ££££££ in compo now for all the "distress" they've suffered, just like the ones in forest gate who got £500K
EVEN though one of them tried attacking a British Soldier on duty at Buckingham Palace and the other one had loads of Child Porn on his PC!

Hang 'em all!
Can't argue with that, we just need a decent Government who actually LIKES British people and doesn't make them 2nd class citizens in their OWN country!
Don't you just love "multicuturalism"?
