Default Private Plate question..........

Am i right in thinking if i want to take my private plate off, then i just pay the £105 fee and i can keep the reg until i decide to put it on another car, without paying a fee every year?

A few people have told me that it would have to be put on another car within 12 months of taking it off, otherwise id have to pay the fee again.

Anyone clear this up for me please?

Cheers.

You have to pay £25 a year to keep it on retention..

I know its not much but I cant see how the dvla can justify a charge of £25 to keep the rights to a plate that we've already paid for.

Thing is though, isnt it the same principle as the recent changes in bank charges? The banks have had to refund the charges as they can only charge what it costs them due to you going overdrawn etc etc. It obviously doesnt cost £25 in admin and paperwork etc, its just another way to get money out of us as you say mate.
