Ive looked into this and I was planning it this way before I got the 360 instead.
If you listen to the UK Volvo 300 fanatics/geeks they make out its next to impossible, not to mentoin the fact GTT engines are shit/unreliable/etc etc.
But me n you both know they shithot engines
Its never been done before it seems, but it looks dead easy.
As long as you buy a 1.4 as your base car, the GTT engine bolts straight in and onto the volvo box, as does crank sensor, the lot.
Unless my eyes are decieving me, electrically it will all swap straight over, even the coil/ign ecu thingy looks the same, tho obv different inside.
Massive engine bay that the 1.4 looks totally lost in, so can fit as big a turbo/intercooler/chargecooler/rad as you can imagine.
Turbo looks like it WONT fit in the natural place over the gearbox, with the heater box removed it may, but its close, and the interior heater pipes will deffo need moving.
IMO the cheapest and easiest thing to do is run a short (nees to be 6in long, max) extension pipe from the stock manifold round to the other side of the enginebay and mount the turbo anywhere there, could fit twin T88s there if you wanted there so much room (once you binned off the spare wheel!).
Need to change the fuel system as stock its a gay mechanical pump, but thats no biggie.
Prob should change the alloy prop for an uprated one, but they only like 150notes or so.
And well, thas about the basics of it, theres more, but all pretty easy stuff.
Any more info, jus ask mate.
Idve been halfway thru it by now if i didnt get the 360 instead, and its even easier to fit a 740/940 turbo engine to a 360 than it is a GTT or Clio lump to a 340!

340 brakes are really good actually, i actually slammed the nose of mine into the tarmac once (the suspension is wallowy to say the least)
i've had three now, a mint condish 1.4 3-door with FVSH
a ratty graffitid up 1.7 3-door
and a v-good 1.7 gl 3-door
i still love them, and i will get another shortly to compete in the Lombard Rally

Saw the volvos up there look like good fun, However suspect the night wont run again next month as the marshalls were asking people to behave and just got aload of abuse back....
Spoke to one of them and he thinks it will be shut down again as people cant behave.

I want it myself, but cant justify SIX cars (Tho it payday friday, so get it before i change my mind )
Then speak to Nev at DriftMoto for all the parts you need, anything right up to a 5link rear end if you wanted to go silly.
The car that started the legend, Nevs old one

Anything you want, from coilovers to simple stuff.
99% of people just go for lowering blocks for the rear and super low springs on the front. All from Nev. Thatd cost about 150quid for the lot.

If you want to try and fit a GTT engine, get a 1.4, whatever model.
If you want to try and fit a Clio engine, or want a car thats perfectly good at drifting anyhow, but a 1.7, whatever model.
If you want to try and fit a 740/940turbo engine or want a car that actually goes well, buy a 360, whatever model (tho 3drs are rare so better, 4doors are cool, 5drs are common, and there carb and injection, but either will do, with carb a bit better).
Later ones have PAS too.

Hmm, well i'm not really too bothered about how fast it is to be honest. The one and only reason I want one is to learn to drift in. The car is cheap and insurance is about 100 quid so I won't be too bothered when I hit something trying to drift.
Are the 1.4 ok to learn to drift in with a standard engine if I do the suspension and drop it on it's arse?
To be honest i'd rather learn in something quite hard to get the basic skills as hopefully when I can afford something better they should transfer across?

Why the fuck you want to drop in a GTT lump if you dont care about power
If you want to learn to drift, your right, you dont need power but 1.4 is too weedy once you doing anything even a little quick, get a 1.7 or ideally a 360, dont touch the engine, weld the diff, fit a drivers bucket seat, slice the handbrake rubber and pull the spring out, and go drive.
My 360 has about 90bhp tops and its more than enough for 2nd gear in the dry, prob 3rd TBH.

I wouldnt worry about an R5 engine or whatever until i've learnt the basics. I imagine it will take me ages just to get used to any of it. The car might not last long enough to put a R5 engine in when I find out how shit I am at it
#67
IMO get a 1.7 or ideally a 360, learn in that, and get a 1.4 ready to do the swap when you feel you need it.
Learning with a 1.4 will piss you off as tho you dont need power, they just TOO underpowered to do anything fast.
Unless you at competition level a stock engined 1.7 or 360 is good enough anyhow IMO.
Dont get me wrong, a GTT engined one id love too, but its not a 5min project, and you say you not fussed on the power.

If reckless goon type driving floats your boat... you would have loved it.
If you have to be in bed by 10:00 like 70% of the people who were there, which is why they all left at 9:30
If none of the above appeals to you then it would have been a shit night.
