Honest answer:
The shims are an extremely poor substitute for the proper rear beam set-up, as they ONLY adjust the toe (and only a fixed amount).
From the factory the standard beam is supposed to be parrallel, but with the myriad of bushes, this means that in foward motion, the deflection these give causes the tyres to toe OUT, causing 50% of the wear to the inside edges of the tyres (the other 50% being caused by the excessive negative camber).
Fitting the shims gives a small amount of static toe-in and with bush deflection, this goes to parrallel or retains a small amount of toe-in (all depending on the static toe that the original beam gives to start with).
Not only does this improve traction, it gives aditional sideways stability due to the self centering effect of wheels in a toe-in stance, as opposed to the "tank slapping" effect a toe-out stance gives. However, this does feel very different, and takes some getting used to, and some people don't like how the car feels set-up like this.
