What is the legal way to reshell a car ? The other shell is brand new.
Any help would be great.

sure you can transfer the plate and numbers over as this is a brand new shell.

will have to contact the dvla though.

You will need the new shell plus two major components from the original vehicle. Make sure you have proof otherwise it WILL go on a Q plate.

In order to retain the original registration mark:
cars must use:

The original unmodified chassis or unaltered bodyshell (i.e. body and chassis as one unit - monocoque); or a new chassis or monocoque bodyshell of the same specification as the original supported by evidence from the dealer or manufacturer (e.g. receipt).

And two other major components from the original vehicle - ie suspension (front & back); steering assembly; axles (both); transmission or engine.
Hope this helps...

You need a receipt for the new shell from the original vendor, ie a proper Ford dealer.

Gotta agree totally. If its a new shell with blank floors, just get someone who's stamped them before to do it, preferably someone who has the correct stamps with the * although you can use the i stamp and go round a few times. It needs to be done properly otherwise it sticks out like a sore thumb.

It may be technicaly wrong to do it but morally if youre not ringing a motor then I cant see the problem. The DVLA sometimes get their knickers in a twist and you could end up with a new chassis number stamped into the turret!

as said yep..you could end up with new chassis no stamped into the turret..starting with the dvla issue someting like *sabtvro******. then the value of its fooked as its not even a cossie number on the shell and will prob just say ford sierra on the book

i have had cars under a year old that have been reshelled in ford bodyshops and the original number stamped into them...do you think they contact the dvla?...errr nope!

so whats wrong with the opld shell......is it fooked, a right off etc...

So,when you build the new car up,use the original chassis number and then get it all ready....you go to tax, mot, insure etc...or even drive it about if its already got them on, then you get stopped by the police etc....blow the reg through and then ask why this car was a total loss,a smashed to fook car etc....

no record fit being re-shelled....its a ringer then.

if its a new shell then do it proper.

Dave, its not a ringer..its just had one of its major components repaced...nothing illegal....and as i said it WILL probably end up being issued with another chassis number....which will have no relation to a cosworth

but if its not been done through the propper channels...

if the ar is not on any lists, hpi etc.. then you could get away with it but if its a new shell then why not tell them, its getting all the parts from the donor car so no reason for it to be put on a q reg.

a pic from last month

Dave the car has already had some welding done on the floor and innerwings. To put back to good condition a would want to replace both inner wing, outer wings. the doors are starting to go along with the back pannel, and you never no whats behind the body kit. car is still tax'ed and MOTed.

thought in the long run would be better of with the new shell while a had the chance

Dave....because the pratts at dvla will prob give it another chassis number..which is fooking ridiculous when its a brand new blank shell and will fook its value...i,m sure he,s reshelling it due to rust not accident anyway

not that bad but considering it still needs sorting from the summer it may be easier to reshell, altho i am seriously considering selling up and having a break for a bit.

The DVLA are useless.....They couldnt get my address right after two attempts and had the cars details mis-spelt too...Every time i have been in contact with them they have cocked something up....

So just reshell it, Dont involve the DVLA but do a proper job on it using Ford only parts and dont cut any corners, its basically the same car anyway as all the parts of your cirrent 3dr are there...

The DVLA will only cock things up and leave you in the lurch!
