Default Anyone in Devon? Scavenging from wrecked container ship?

Hi guys,

Just wondered if anyone in Devon has been down to the coast to see whats been washed up from that beached container ship? They recon in excess of 200 containers have gone overboard, and quite a few have washed up on the coast.

The ship contained a range of goods from perfume, casks of wine, car parts, cars and new BMW motorbikes.

I think if I lived close I'd be down there for a nosey about. Would be excitting looking about anyway, like treaure hunting LOL Not sure on the ethics of taking the stuff though. I would feel like it is 'stealing' even if the stuff is realistically just gonna be lost to the sea or next high tide anyway... what's ya thoughts?

Also i will be making my own inlet manifold as the bogg bros item seems expensive at Ł188,so any tips would be appreciated.

Not quite. All you have to do is report your find to the receiver of wrecks. The owners of the cargo can claim it back but if you went to some trouble of salvaging it you can present them with any costs, clean up of the goods, storage etc and most of the time it isn't worth the hassle for them to get water damaged goods back.

I'm a Police Sergeant in the area where the ship was beached. It was quite sad to see someones possessions who was obviously emmegrating, being washed ashore ( photo albums etc, childrens toys etc ) and people looking through suitcases etc to see what they could find.

As above, it was on the local news tonight and theres these three lads beating in the side of a crate with the biggest pair of bolt cutters you have ever seen, once they were in the reporter asked "don't you feel bad rumaging through someones stuff?" the bloke blantenly couldn't give a toss as he pulled out pictures and photos out on the beach seeing if theres anything worth stealing.

Makes me ashemed to be british tbh.

Personally if i lived there i still wouldn't go down as i wouldn't want to be associated with the rest of them there stealing dog food, nappies, and literally anything else they can get there hands on.

People shouldnt be down there stealing the stuff, but sadly, as long as you declare what you have taken you are able to take it.

Its just said on the news, which is why the police are shutting off the area.

Initially my thoughts were its all fair game, its only gonna get destroyed anyway. However after reading that it made me realise that not all of it is commercial, the contain peoples lives as well. Imagine the excitment of moving your whole life to another country and the shite felling when you find out all your belongings are now washed up on a beach being picked through for the choice bits. Fucking sad.

Its still someones property that they've paid for. You don't like it when people take bits from your cars or damage them. Same thing.

There was a woman on the radio this morning from Sweden, she and her husband were watching the news and couldn't believe their eyes when they saw people rummaging through their container. Taking paintings and furniture which had been in their family for generations.

They were emigrating to Britain to start up a business.

Can you imagine how sick that would make you feel? You'd want to be there so that you could punch their bloody lights out

So what about all the people who didnt take out cover?.............

Moving / reloacating abroad with your worldy possessions, aint cheap - thus some have to waive insurance.

But when it does happen - Some lines place a General Average on the loads = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_average

General Average will be placed on the ship & all its load - all them people thieving off the beach (which it is by law, thieving) will be accountable. The cargo has salvage rights attached to it.

Its bad enough having this happen as a shipper, as when a General Average is placed on the vessel the shipping line claim costs back from the cargo shippers, but we cover ourselves from this by passing liability to the clients - so getting back to my previous statement actually means that one single person could end up with a bill for thounds of USD (and i'm talking well into double figures!).

So as Dave has said - robbing pikey cnuts! Thieving fucking shampoo / nappies - Get a fucking job & buy them yourselfs!

I people dont take cover out while move there stuff over seas then they are so fookin sutpied and should'nt be moving in the first place.

Agreed it is shocking people taking nappies etc, but if the like the BMW bikes are water damage etc, BMW are hardly going to take them back just be of insurance.

I want to know is, was the vesel seaworthy? It only had repaiers done not so long ago when it run aground
