whats involved in splitting a split rim? is it just a case of removing bolts and any gaskets etc or is it more involved? anyone done this?
there a right pig if there 3 piece items, where gaskets are involved.
took me 3 attempts to get them to seal properly.
but worth it for the overall look.
2 peice items i would imagine are pretty simple.

depends on how they're put together ime..
some have the bolts and use a rubber o-ring to seal it.. (these seem to be easier to split to me).
others just have the 3 pieces and people use (often lots of) RTV sealant to seal them together.
Currently I'm having major hassle trying to separate my last one. (i've got the outer off but the centre and the inner rim just will NOT come apart), so if anyone has any great tips please pass them on! I've tried using stanley (which worked fine for the other 3), tried silicon eating stuff form B&Q (didn't even rtouch the sealant, just discoloured the rim where it came into contact, but luckily that won't be visible) and am now at a total loss. Don't want to hammer a screwdriver or similar in the split them as i guess this would ruin the actual rim!

i have a set of 3 piece welded split rims. mike took one of them apart at the weekend. he had to undo all the bolts and then heat the wheel up a bit as the centre piece was also glued. then with a little bit of hammering, the centre bit just came out

Are they two or three piece?
I took the nuts and bolts outa mine then depending which way the centre comes out, twat it with a rubber or soft plastic mallet and it should come out!

3 piece lol.
tt's just not playing.. pissing me right off now!
think i'll have to make 4 up out of one of my spare sets for now.
but i still have the problem as i only have 4 of these particular ones and i need them for road use.. the others are for track action!

I could have the same problem, my splitrims are three piece and I want to change the centres to black. Mine are held together with some putty type stuff which is a right git to remove. After reading this I will try and get them wet painted without splitting I think.
What about using a wire brush on a drill and rubbing the sealant away? Or send it away to a proper wheel refurbish place.

i think the wire brush idea will trash the alloy rims to be honest.
seriously starting to wish i never took them apart.
the putty stuff is probably going to be RTV sealant.
I'm trying to avoid sending them to a refurb place at the moment, but it's looking increasingly likely.
