Default Bought a cossie. Can you drive it home without tax?

Just bought a 4x4 saph. It has got an MOT but no tax.

Anyone know the rules on driving it home if its SORN?

DVLA are shit and their helpline is just an automated service with recorded messages.

Also, any banks still open at this time on a Saturday as gotta draw out the rest of the cash?

Technically no but I wouldn't worry about it.

It would take a mean copper to report you if you have the paperwork to prove you just bought it and even if you do come across an asshole it's only a small fine and backdated tax from when you bought the vehicle.

Insurance is the important one

Wish there was but there isn't much love lost between uniform (especially traffic) and detectives so might come unstuck with one.

Yeah Jim, it was great. Wasn't expecting much to be honest as it was fairly cheap and first one i've looked at but the seller seemed a decent bloke and was in nice condition. No rust on body but a bit on underside but looked more like surface rust than anything structural (touch wood).

Had a drive and felt a lot quicker than my 24v but I think its probably about the same performance wise and just felt quicker due to the kick in the back. Its got a bayjoo stage one (he thought about 260bhp).

Its the first cossie i've driven and was really impressed

They can actually do you for it as it shouldnt be on the road. My mates been done for no tax a couple of times where he's gone over a couple of weeks by mistake and each time they just made him tax it and pay a Ł20 fine.

As long as its not more than a month out of tax, then you should be ok if you get pulled, as long as you tax it that month, so you pay for the whole month.

if the car is sorn off road and you are caught driving it, they can take the car and give you aŁ5000 fine and you ve still got to tax it and pay back the back duty on it, they will tell you, that you should have taxed it before you went to pick it up, its more serious if the car as been sorn off road than if you ve just not renewed the tax on it, and if its sorn you cant tax it until the logbook comes back in your name as you ve to take the log book in your name to tax it

It is not worth the hassle.

I got taken to court for road tax a few years ago (similar situation) and that was after I paid the fixed penalty for not displaying it.

You would get a fixed penalty for not displaying tax, then reported to DVLA, who will also fine you and backdate to last tax disc.

And if you have a bump, your insurance won't pay out as the car isn't road legal.

Probably risk it to be honest as chances of being stopped are hopefully remote and should be able to talk my way out of it even if I do

if you do drive it without tax - check your insurance booklet first as one policy I had for my cossie stated that the car was not covered if it had no tax!

the traffic police are the ones to look out for as they come close to you . it comes up on their screen that your car is not taxed but the patrol cars as to do a spot check on you to find out your car isnt taxed, on the motorway the dvla have cars with cameras and as you go passed it says checking and then they pick up you ve got no tax and sent the fine in the post

Pete, I bought a MK2 mexico a good few years ago for Ł1k (told you it was a while ago) and was driving it home. On the M6 it set on fire and we had to call the fire brigade. When they arrived the car was a burnt out wreck. The firemen were all sad to see such a lovely old car wrecked.

The policeman took my details and I told him i'd just bought it, I showed him the reciept and mot/log book etc. The cunt gave me a producer. I explained I was insured through work to drive any vehicle but I knew the tax was out.

The cunt hassled me at work AFTER I had produced the insurance saying I wasnt covered etc. Next thing I knew I had a summons for no tax (1 day)

I went to court with a solicitor I had paid for and pleaded guilty to 1 days tax evasion and was finded a grand total of Ł13.

So, moral of the story is to make sure you are taxed.

Would I drive a car I had just bought again with no tax? hell yeah. Would I drive a new car without a fire extinguisher, not on your nelly.

Nah unfortunately I can't. The missus has a one car policy! Had it 6 years and had some great fun in it. I've given it to my brother (rather than sell it to a stranger for peanuts) as he is without a car at the moment.

I would personally

But my company works very closely with Surrey police and i know them and Hants police are coming down very hard on untaxed vehicles, also uninsured drivers and drivers without a license. Not sure what the fine is but they will deffo take the car away and it should cost Ł105 no vat to get the car back not including fines and endorsements.

And they are very clever at catching people, they use vans and cars with cameras, probably unmarked half the time.

Also, if you decide to tow it and the cossies wheels are on the road, then it has to be taxed.
I got caught towing a car that had no tax and was taken to court for it.

I can't see why you don't tax it before you pick it up, you may lose a little tax but it is better than the hassle and the fines.

The problem is I won't be able to tax it until the log book comes back in my name (or can you tax it on the section you keep?) which could take ages.

Only other option is to try and pursued the previous owner to tax it for me and give him the cash.

By far the best idea mate - I had to do that on my silver xr2 when I bought it - otherwise it would be sitting about at their house for x weeks untill the DVLA sorted themselves out...

if its sorn off road, you need to take the logbook to tax the car and it as to be in your name, not the person who you are buying it off and not the green slip,
