Out of interest, what's the difference between oil for diesel cars, and oil for petrol cars?

Or is this just Shell's clever marketing gimmick... i fell for it and bought the diesel stuff for my 2.0TDCi - Wasn't aware there was a difference but wanted to be on the safe side.

I always put standard oil in my van i had before (1.9SDi) and it never hurt it i don't think. Though having said that you can't really see any performance decreases in a 69hp VW Caddy, it just makes more noise when something is up

diesel oil has more detergants (bad spelling) in for cleaning purposes as an oil burer is a dirty dirty engine

Not alot...

BUT

it might not be the same specification as a petrol from the same manufactuer used. EG VW diesels use some seriously expensive oil.

tupically they are about the same... but it definatly has more dispersents in it, this stops the soot in the oil becoming lumps of carbon and blocking things.

Cheers for that

Is it worth using the diesel specific stuff over magnatec? or even the motorcraft (?) stuff that ford recommend?

Default oil

ford use 5/30 semi synthetic in nearly everything, especially anything zetec. the galaxy pd (i think- its 1 of the vag engines anyway) uses something like 0/40 or 0/30. but a puma definately 5/30 semi.

My Focus has just had it's 12,500 mile (after 6 months ) service end of december so levels are fine, but it's good to know. The handbook says to use the motorcraft stuff, will check the specifics tomorrow and see what spec it recommends
