Default new tyre question

do new tyres need to be "worn in" to get them to their best?

i've had new tyres put on to he mondeo and, rather than make the handling better, it seems to have made it worse

going from a 205/50/17's to 225/40/18's should be making it better going round corners, but, other than making the steering a little bit stiffer and the road noise just that little bit more loud, but still not intrusive, or even the ride worse, because it's still nice and fresh, but it seems to wash out at the front. it seems to be the total opposite of what i wanted to do, it's like going down to running 165 tyres

thing is, when they were delivered they were all greasy and sticky, almost like they'd been dipped in honey, but am i expecting too much after only having put 8 miles on them?

8 miles? Jeez I doubt they'd even get warm in that time

liek redkop said 8 miles on general driving and the tyres are far from hot. For sure i personally woudlnt hammer my own 'new tyres' right away but there is not alot you can really do that wrong on a road tyre.

It has nothing to do with the tyres warming up etc , but the protective coating on them that prevents them from going "off" in storage. This will take around 25-30 miles to wear off a brand new set of tyres, so take it easy until then, or you WILL crash .

Serious answer now.... I have always gone on advice from tyrefitters when I've had new rubber.... 'take it easy for 200-300 miles'

just do a fucking great burnout for the fronts, and few handbrake turns for the rears lol

in seriousness tho, take it easy for 100 miles and they will be fine

Like Mike says, they also use a releasing fluid to get the tyres out the moulds at manufacturing time and makes the tyres very greasy.

You need to let this wear off so take it easy on them for a 100 miles or so and they will improve

thanks for the replies guys, girls and dan

it's a 2.0 auto mk3, with 225 tyres on, it wouldn't spin with the 205's on so there is no way these buggers are going to get gripless

Take it easy for a few hundred miles as other people have already said tyres have a protective coating from when they are in the moulding machine,so
1 they dont stick to the machine,
2 they can they can be stored for long periods of time.

A few years ago when I ran a tyre shop,i sold my pal some Uniroyal rain sports for his Saph,I told him how good they were for the money and how they are good in the wet, then when he pulled out the turning where the shop was he span both back wheels with out even trying! It werent even wet out!The look on his face as he slid past the shop was priceless!!

But once he had worn them in he loved them

normal mondeo suspension, and some sort of nankang directional gubbins on them

cars at home, i'm at work so don't know exactly what they are
the continentals that were on the alloys before were great but they were them aquacontact things but couldn't really stretch to sticking the on the mondeo as the tyres would have cost a few quid moer than i've got at the mo

and it's not gone out in the wet as i'm paranoid about spalshing through a puddle and warping the brakes

Not called "ditch finders" for the fun of it.....

But on the plus side they are 1 of the better budget tyres out there
