I Want.......
400 bhp in my Sapph.
What do I need to make it so? Can I run standard comp?
Its 2wd (205 block) running greens, 3 bar map sensor, collins chip (unsure), bd10 cams, T34 with cut back exhaust wheel 360 bearing and 0.55 exhaust housing (Rated for 430bhp), boosting 23psi peak and holding 20psi.
Is it as easy as running greys, Rs 500 intercooler and changing the chip?
Work will, as alway, be carried out by myself to keep costs down. Except the set up of course which will probably be done by Stu.
Thanks in advance, any advice is welcome.

On ebay you can get a resistor that will give you 200bhp and also they do turbo's that will push you to over 800bhp...and electronic superchargers that will see you closer to a 1000bhp...why has no one else ever followed this route??
Yeah mate...a few bolt on parts plus a decent head gasket on a YB can see a healthy 400bhp....providing your lump is in a solid state to start with. Get it done

To guarantee 400bhp you will need a bigger turbo than a T34,i'd say T38 like mine but tbh they're shit
then a set of greys
WRC gasket or Wire rung block
RS500 sized cooler
Grp A Fuel Pump and new wiring to it

engine should be pretty fresh to be honest,a tired engine won't last that long at that power.
but a standard engine and comp ratio (std pistons) are fine at that level

So what is the realistic power Ill run with my current turbo then?
I dont want to stress it so much it dies quickly.
I plan a full rebuild next winter so as long as it lasts me till then Ill be happy.
The head on mine is ported and polished too.

I had a t34/55 engine but comp ratio was 7.2/1 and was pushing turbo to its limits probably at 32 psi spike holding 28 psi and that made 390bhp and that engine was far from standard. So would be happy with 380bhp if i was you mate and dont want any lag Check out my spec list in this months perfomance ford ( Texaco 3dr )

although the rest of the engine spec saves it from being a complete disaster and it should hopefully make decent numbers once i've changed a few things

Bud-weis, is it the same on the road? I'm pretty sure I'm hitting full boost a fair bit before that. Might be worth checking with Karl if all's as it should be?

well it seems to be pretty similar on the road,i'll keep an eye out or the next couple of days.....the car does seem very fast though, and actually doesn't 'feel' too laggy, but the figures say it is
Karl is NOT a fan of my turbo at all,but he concedes it is ok for my car and if i'm happy with it then why change it....in the near future we're gonna push it to it's limits,so if it helps me make good figures/makes the car faster then i'll be happier with it,but i want at LEAST 450bhp,and am secretly hoping i'll be pleasantly surprised with it,were gonna push about 2.5bar (maybe slightly less)held through it though,so hope it stays in one peice but it made 424bhp with only 1.8bar held recently,so in theory it should do well

would say there was something amiss if a t38 aint getting full boost until 4800.?
boost leak?
Bud..check the manifold where it connects together...my car used to lose boost from there and increased lag, bigtime.
look for carbon on the heat sheild.

Mines a UT version, and all T38's can suffer with surge if not mapped correctly,
it's not long been mapped Euan so everything should be fine,it's going back soon for different Injectors/ECU/Map sensor, and i may ask about cam timing to see what can be done

I have just fitted a UT t38 and my car is in for mapping justnow along with getting the cams dialled in so will be intresting to see where it makes peak boost, im running BD10(lag) cams so might not be that great. On the way through to drop the car off running 10psi it seemed to be coming on boost early enoughbut was trying to keep it off boost so never let it build, will need to wait till its mapped to see what it will do.

even when my cam timing was standard my t4 was stil on boost quicker than your t38
thats what makes me think there is something a miss.
basically the more air the engine can flow the less lag the turbo will have.
remeber im running very comp too so mine should be ALOT worse than yours.
strange

For Euan, these are my plots....the info is fairly straight forward, the boost plot shows how it's mapped to fall (because of lack of fuel from the greys) and the AFR shows how naff level6 is
there was 2 runs done,first was 424bhp and 2nd 420bhp,power @wheels is shown on the fuel/boost plot
i'm 'pretty' sure this is exactly how the car behaves on the road

so 358 ATW?...
yours is 2wd isnt it Bud?
So going by DD you lose 66 bhp.
why do DD rolling roads not use a fixed ref points for revs?
for example, in 500 RPM increments?

Smidsy
well i wanna go L8 anyway because it's a much nicer drive,so i may aswell do all i want to do at the same time.....hopefully be able to do some juggery and improve spool up,but also aim for a big increase in torque

Yeah the T38 will stay...although it looks a little naff it actually feels good to drive with, and the car really picks up well.
i'm going to 1000cc injectors and a 5 bar map sensor along with the level 8,oh and the standard air box will go back on before the remap.
you never know i may see summat extraordinary from the turbo, but i doubt it just depends what kinda boost it's capable of holding,420bhp at 1.8bar isn't too shoddy i suppose,so with 2.5bar or thereabouts it may just be very very good.
also in reply to Pete,my T38 receipt says 'special build' on it,so it may not be exactly the same spec?
