they ( SRAM ) make two types of shifter one for shimano mechs and one for SRAM mechs, SRAM mechs have twice the cable throw so you need to make sure you have the right ones. I run SRAM Rocket shifters with XT mechs on my Santa Cruz, a really lovely setup

the new sram shifters there are two types sx-4 which is 1-1 ration will only work with sram mechs and the tx-4/tx-5 (i think) which is 2-1 ration and will work fine with shimaneo mechs, have a look on chainreactioncycles.co.uk will tell you there if im wrong
