Default 18 Wheelers..

I've always wonderd if an 18 wheeler has all the torque and power to pull the big heavy trailer and still drive at reasonable speed. Surely there stupidly fast when the trailer isn't attacthed? If you understand what i'm saying. Anyone answer my question.

Cheers benni.

I MAY have removed a certain fuse once when i was in a scania with a trailer full of smeg fridge/freezers and i MAY have noticed 85mph on my sat nav. This MAY have been done as i had already spent 4 nights out and wasnt willing to spend another after being fooked about allday by the transport office...So in conclusion if you feel the need to go fast belive me they do do it, not that i know or have done it......

Default 18 wheelers

I drive HGV and let me tell you when they have not got the trailer attached they are fooking quick and would out accelerate a lot of average cars on the road, although restricted to 56 MPH they get there rather quickley and feel fast, as stated above some of them are fooking quick particularly the irish boys who do not have limiters fitted, they have gone pass me on the motorway when i was doing 70 MPH in a 7'5 ton lorry

mentioned above is about pulling the fuse for the restricter, problem is manufacturer's have got wise to this and with most new lorries if you do that you loose most things on the dash including the speedometer (bollox) but you would be in serious shit if caught by the five o and would more than likely get sacked from your employment,

It is crap sitting at 56 MPH but what you have to remember is you have got a lot of weight, 38 tons is not easy to anchor down from 70-80 MPH, when i was a kid i used to go to work with my Dad and most of his lorries would do this speed, i remember he had a few points on his licence from time to time when he got caught i blame him for me being such a speed freak

charlie luciano I bet when we get strong winds and it's blowing cars it's a nightmare for lorries? Or is it better with all the weight?

Cheers for the replie mate.

High winds can be tretcherous for high sided vehicles especially when their empty (no load) drivers with curtain sided trailers will open the curtains and tie them back in windy weather so the wind passes through the motor reducing risk of a turn over, also good to hold ya speed down in these conditions

Depends what you drive ,

Tautliners or curtainsiders as theyre more commonly known get blown over quite a bit as there isnt much weight to the trailers yet the wind has all that surface area to hit .

Anything else , you have to be driving like a right cunt to roll over

Although anything carrying moving product ie Tankers are a pain to drive quick when loaded

And yeah you can take passengers when doing continental work , I know mates that take the Mrs with them and then some that dont that leather the arses of the prossies at the various truck stops en route

my dads got a few tipers and they're now all limited to 56. however, as charlie luciano said, they're unbelievablly quick to accellerate when empty

when he had his low lowders he had a scania 142 that wasn't limited, and that would still pull 70 ish with a 40 odd ton machine on the back.

Well this is down to the cost of transport being so high, the planners promise the delivery by such and such a time and you are given no time for hold ups so sitting behind a slightly slower lorry is not an option....

For instance if you get to a ndc with chilled/frozen goods 15min late you will be turned away...Yes that means a days driving/planning/fuel/pay all down the swanny........

So next time you rush to the shops to buy that dvd player/newspaper/fresh salmon, infact everything you use/consume...etc remember your getting it on time and fresh cos of that wanker/lazy/shit head lorry driver...

when I was younger my dad had one of last Scania 143 450 before the EDC came in, dunno why but it had lots of shims iin the pump and it would leather my XR2 (140bhp agra cvh) on take off.

mind you if a certain fuse used to blow on the Merc he replaced it with it would take 3 figures to pass the damn thing

56mph has knackered all the craic, damn things have bigger discs and callipers all round than I have wheels

You look at some of the Volvos out there and scanias and a few operatord are running the 610bhp Volvo FH16's. think the torque on these is circa 2000 lb/ft.

i used to work for a heavy recovery firm and i had a renault magnum 6+4 650 horse detroit v8 in it.it weighted 38 tonnes on it`s own.i could regularly see 80+ on the tacho.it would pull 100+ tonnes,no problems.oh and it was quite good at putting them back on their wheels too.

i once recovered a broken down army tank transpoter once on the a1m.it had a tank on it.it weighted nearly 70 tonne.pulled on the dual carriagey no probs.if you had the balls you could over take restricted wagons while you had a load on.70+ ton over taking normal wagons.
not long after the boss had the magnum built i had a 44 tonner on the back going up the m6 between j15 and j16 just before the keele services.this paddy wagon came up beside me and was looking at the wrecker.he started to pull away.i dropped it a cog and 1/2 and under took him.his face was a picture.not many wagons can beat a paddy wagon.

Dunno why but I'd love to ride shotgun in a tractor unit with no trailer.

Ever since I was little I have wanted to.
