Default Cosworths and drifting?

Just wondering if any Cossies are used to compete in drifting events? I've never seen any, but then i don't follow drifting very closely!

If they are not used, is there a reason?

They are used, but the standard suspension geometry both front and rear doesnt really lend itself well to the sport and the standard diff is shite, so a lot of changes have to be made.

Starting with a 200sx or similar makes a lot more sense TBH

I thought jap car would be easier to make into a drift car and i suppose they have lots of off the shelf parts availible.

I take it by changes you'd need fully adjustable suspesion - camber toe etc?

Does anyone use 4WD cars to drift or are they all RWD?

Castor is the biggest issue, not camber or toe.

The P100 won in the early days, things have moved on now. But that proved its the DRIVER more than the car.

Its a skill sport, it cant be bought like drag racing or brunters times. (unlucky rod )

Cossies are perfctly capable of being modded for drifting, and to be the best drift car ever if you wanted.
They not the best base, but not as bad as many cars that are commonly used.

There no competitive drift Cossies in the UK at mo, there have been a few competing in the past, but then anyone could enter without passing a test, and even then they never came anywhere really.

The last two rounds of D1GB in 2006 a 3dr Sierra with a Mustang V8 entered, but he came last in qualifying both times.

He was able to enter as he went for the licence in a different car at the start of the season, an old Nissan Stanza rallycar, though never came anywhere much in that either.

This thread, if you scroll down, has about all the Fords that have ever competed in drifitng in the UK...

https://passionford.com/forum/viewto...ighlight=drift

Personally id love to see a Cossie competing in one of the UK drift championchips, but considering the history so far, and the response this thread got...
https://passionford.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=239115
I cant see it happening for a long time, if ever.

theres a fair few cossies drifting here in ire. their not crap for drifting just need a fair bit more work to get them competitive against the jap stuff. many a time ive held a slide in my 1.6 saff on a wet roundabout still its a lot better to see a not so common good looking sierra on drift than Another white jap s13/14/15/sylvia
heres a few pics i put on another post the other day but ill put em up again the fella in the black 3dr won the last prodrift round

I just find it strange that with the currant trend of trackdaying RS's nobody has had a go at drifting. It would be nice to see a 3 door out competing with the jap stuff. Then a mk2 Escort with a cossie lump would be even better....

it gets to apoint where you can't get the sierra back because of it shite lock

The above pics are from Prodrift, the Irish (southern) drift championchip, not D1 or owt (tho the drivers in the top class of ProDrift is as good if not better than D1GB).

The 3dr won his class maybe, but im sure he didnt win the actual round of Prodrift.

And its skill more than anything, and unlike most the world, im not daft enough to think im even good enough to get a licence, never mind be competitive!
Ive been a passenger in 4-5 competing D1 cars, and know the speeds you need to be going to be competitive, and, erm, no chance, not yet

Im also in the very exclusive "im shit and i know i am" club, i think its something to do with age, im sure if i was 18 when drifting was trendy I would have thought I was a driving god for drifting just like i was convinced I had what it takes to be a rally driver etc, lol

IMO its the older guys with RWD cars who think it the most, rather than the young lads.

A lot of the younger people are in awe of it and get into it, the older guys whos had RWDs before usually give it all the "yeah, whats so hard about that, anyone can do that" ive even heard that a few times in the Time Attack pits at GT Battle rounds from Time Attack drivers, most of whom should know better...

Check out this new Prodrift promo video, fucking awesome.

Even has the Black 3dr Cossie in it!!!

78meg but WELL worth it, awesome quality and awesome vid, pretty inspiring too.
Good explanations of stuff that might help some people too (shame didnt explain the twin drifting bit too, as its basically a race, hence the speed, but hey).

he actually did win the top pro round, and for about the past two years hes nearly consistintly finished in the top eight without any notable failures. as you know some of the best drivers in the world came from ireland, damien mulvery, darren mac, and just to prove the cossie point i can remember several times when this cossie(pat mcdonough) has beaten both of these drivers in their top spec championship winning cars. the driver is a huge factor in drifting

Thats Jeek with the 24v Saff, yup, hes good.
He's using the Saff to compete in one of the drift series this year (curently seam welding the chassis and caging it up), so will be interesting so see how well he does.

The 3dr is a chap called Pat McDonagh.

Not sure about that, last round he didnt get to the final 8, same in round 3 (knocked out by Mulvey in final 16), dont think he got into the final 16 and deffo not final 8 in round 2, but in round 1 he did get to the final 8.

Not sure on rounds 4-5-6 as there no detailed reports on them i can see.

thats when you know you are shit mate! i went out with grimsey in the s13 and thought"fuck me so this is what he can do with legal space"

then i went out with a little ginger marshall that arrived in a pug 307,he took grimseys car out with me in it and OH MY FUCK what a driver.totally didnt expect him to be that good! he was drifting at silly speeds and heading toward where everyone was parked and stood and then just chucked it around like it meant nothing.he was doing 80-90mph slides on tarmac that was shite like it was an everyday thing and this wasnt your yank the e-brake and go one way he was in a big series of drifts.

i so want to get into it but know i'll be shit i want the fun though.still when i do ive got someone who is shit hot to teach me

Aye, its an eye opener, to say the least.

A little ginger marshall that took Grimseys car out and was awesome?

Bald head and glasses? Liverpool accent, or quite posh? Covered in Tattoos or not? Sounds like either Mitto or BonBon (if little im guessing Mitto), and been in passenger with both of them (and Grimsey, Brett Castle, and Phil Morrison) and they fucking awesome.

It it was BonBon he IMO the best drifter in Europe, and easily the fastest.

Not sure on rounds 4-5-6 as there no detailed reports on them i can see.

the last round was not an actual points scoring round because the championship was over, it was in watergrasshill in cork but all the drivers where still there and he won.
as i said 'nearly consistintly' (sp) and ive attended every round in about the last four years bar one or two and he has always been competing in the main part of the day when all the crowds are there and the pro battels are going on and has achieved more than he lost.
what im saying is that a good cosworth can mix it with the best of them in drifting no matter what cars, and they're not the teribble car in the first place, wrong front/rear toe/castor/camber axel beam , that some people make them out to be. no car was ever designed to 'drift' like some where to race, its just up to the owner to make it more sutiable for it and put the effort into driving it accordingly too
