The OO on the end only serves to show the area the car was first registered in.
I've got an XR4i that is YOO and my donor XR4x4 was XOO. The 4i has the warranty disc but I understood that to show that it had been troublesome, bought back by Ford and fixed, then disposed through the trade without any further warranty.

When I worked for Hertz, my company cars were almost always Vauxhalls and they usually had *NP, or * AB registrations, just because that's where Vauxhall did their registering.

All our cars would be sold on as ex-management cars, not as press or demo cars.

Just done a search of my old car reg number and this came up, and my car was one of the press cars? It is sierra sapphire rs 4x4 cosworth K242 FTW now on K444 FWD which it has been on the new plate just after it was registered so i was told. I have now owned the car approx 8years!

Now i have found this thread does anybody have any pictures of my car in the press? or any other pictures come to think of it?

Thanks Dan

Just because a car is registered to a car maker, it doesn't mean it was ever a press car. Apart from the possibility that a motoring journalist wrote about your car and maybe took some photos, I don't see a huge excitement about a succession of "driving gods" thrashing my car from cold, up to (and beyond) the limits of man and/or machine.

And if it was in the press fleet, it doesn't mean there are any pictures. For every magazine that reviews cars and prints pics, there will be a few national newspapers that will publish just a single picture (and that might be a library shot provided by the maker and featuring another car), and dozens of regional/local papers that will use - at best - a library shot but more often no picture at all.

In fact, although many publications might qualify for the use of the press fleet, many of them might never publish their own feature but will just regurgitate a syndicated piece or even the makers press-release!

And, of course, a lot of press cars never go near the press, but it's a handy way to score a few more registrations if the competition is getting a bit close to you in the volume tables.

Did find this, but no idea if it is of any use or interest:

Agree 100%, you often see adverts claiming, ex-ford dealer demo, press car, managers car etc etc.

1) It might have sat around in a car-park for the first six months of it's life unused (it does happen) and then sold on just to push up sales figures

2) It's had a different driver every day and been abused from cold, daily with fluid levels hardly ever checked.

3) It genuinely was a managers car, sat on the motor-way or parked in the car park.

None of the above situations are particularly special so why write about it?

The only interesting things with press cars is they're usually first off the production line when a new model is introduced and have an unusual spec. Cassette players when everything else in the "production" range has a cd player for example.

ooo a press car, it lives in a car park enviroment (dents) driven by people who don't care has one off spec and probably random faults that no-one can seem to fix as it's essentially a miss-match of parts.

New-model launches might see some oddball cars in the press fleet (but not too oddball, because they want the story to match the car the punter might buy).

During the life of a model most makers will take normal well-specc'd production cars from stock to keep the press/demo fleets ticking over.

If a car does belong to a maker's press/demo fleet it will be carefully checked in and out (so any damage can be recharged), and repairs will be done so the next reviewer doesn't get a dented car delivered or stuck at the side of the road in a broken-down car.

Having one of these, or a registration number that ends in OO does NOT make a car an ex-press fleet or ex-management car.

More likely to be that than a press car.

The manufacturer wll have their own demo/press fleets and sometimes supply a demo to dealerships ahead of the launch date for a car - eg Mercedes provided SLS demos ahead of launch, and are now putting a left-hand-drive new A-Class in every showroom ahead of the launch, but those cars are not being registered or put on the road and - when RHD stock starts to come in - these will go back to Germany.

Almost all dealer demonstrators are registered in the dealer's name.

Forgot to add, that for 6 years in a FoMoCo subsidiary, almost all my company cars were Vauxhalls, registered to Vauxhall and they were all classed as "management cars".

Nothing special about them - I ordered the spec, colour and options that I wanted. It came from stock or factory order, and when I got my next car it went back to be sold through Network Q.

I might see if i can get some of those re-produced and just rivet them onto some unregistered stock just for the hell of it, see what happens!

Press cars did have those discs, but then so did a succession of non press cars.

Having been in the driving seat of more than a few press cars over the years - I wouldn't rush to buy one!

Every cossies been ragged, it's what they were for or what's the point having one.
Remember the sapphires when new and don't recall seeing one that wasn't sideways or bouncing off the limiter

A bloke on another forum I use discovered his car that he had bought as an ex-demo was actually a press car, when he caught an old episode of Fifth Gear

A friend of mine bought a Vauhall VX220 Turbo about ten years ago. He discovered quite by chance that it used to belong to Vauxhall's press fleet when someone bought him one of those Jeremy Clarkson supercar shoot out type DVDs for Christmas, and half an hour in there was Jezza thrashing his car round Dunsfold.

He was actually quite please, and when he sold the car on the DVD went with it as proof of its provenance.

Most of the APU RS500s were in fact press cars and lent to all the btcc drivers of the day for a 12 month before being returned to Ford to be sold on.

Jerry Mahoney bought his (E198 APU) from Ford and still owns it.

Quite a few of them were stolen around then as well. There was one at the 100th Ford anniversary at Dunton back in 2012 when I attended with my 500.
