Default Viewing a £5k 4x4 saph - advice please

About to go and look at a dealer's 4x4 Saph. Its moonstone, 72K miles, service history and previous MOTs, apparently mint condition, stage 1, forgot to ask how many previous owners.

Price is £4995. Does this sound about right if it is as advertised?

Anything I should know / check when I see it?

Cheers

Check if a reputable tuner has carried out the conversion on it

Check the boot floor above the back box of the exhaust....as they rot out all the time there as the heat from the back box drys the dampness up .

Usual HPI check and engine numbers/floor numbers ect

Check all electrics work and run it up to see if the fans cut in and out a few times

Cheers for that - didn't know about the boot floor.

I hope the dealer has already done the HPi check etc.

Just rang them back and asked how many keepers: apparently the check shows 12 previous keepers!!!

He says its actually only 6 previous keepers as 6 of the 12 are showing plate chages.

So this seems very strange as all previous 6 keepers have had a private plate

Shame as not so keen now

as Tiff say, the boot floor, but pull the trim up in the corners in the boot to see in the inner rear panels,
check the inner front wings by the front struts, I veiwed a couple which had fooked battery trays, not normally a saff weakness but worth a check, also the obvious like panel gaps should be all consistant etc.

When looking for Pauls Cossies we were amazed at how many were advertised as having Full history but actually didnt, so check paper work. and dont rely on proevious HPI checks, get one done yourself, and most important if you are in any doubt or have any niggly worries then walk away,
good luck

RAC website shows:

Vehicle details
Manufacturer FORD
Model SIERRA SAPPHIRE COSWORTH
Body type 4 DOOR SALOON
Colour BLUE
Fuel type PETROL
Date manufactured 31 December 1990
Number of previous owners 12

Thanks for all the advice. Not gonna bother viewing this one. Sounded great until the previous keeper bit! Oh well I guess this is all part of trying to find a straight cossie.

If you are a slightest bit worried then look else where mate...

They are out there but you have to look about...TBH mate, keep an eye on what Paul and Pete have for sale in the sale section as they have some nice cars come through.

To be honest I think I'll try and get a known one from here. Dealers are always a bit of a risk. I'm in no great hurry so i'll just keep my eyes open.

That one was a bit more than I wanted to pay anyway - especially with 12 previous keepers

aye, best to walk if not sure, the first thing i did when looking was to pm paul & pete to see if they had any for sale, shame tho they did not so took me longer lol, but there are some out there

have you looked on ebay? always worth a look, but make sure you view before bidding etc

good luck

I think the only dealers I would trust are the people off here. I know Pete had a couple of very resonably priced 4x4s so might take a trip up there in the new year.

Thanks for all the advice - probably saved me buying a lemon.

some cossies have lots of owners as the owners cant afford to keep them.

sometimes this is ok, but then the worry sets in about how the previous owners looked after them if they could afford to keep the car long.

buy one privately.

You're quite right but why has it had so many owners? It probably is a straight honest car but I don't really want to take the risk.

Having never owned a cossie maybe most people only keep them a year but if I wasn't planning on keeping a car long I wouldn't spend time and money on it.

It sounds a very nice motor and the chap I spoke to seemed okay so if anyone else is looking for one it would be worth a look but its not for me with that many previous owners.

Heres a link for anyone else thats interested:

http://www.abcmotorsport.co.uk/plot.php?carid=51

One of the owners uses this site. He posted when their escort cos got nicked a couple of months ago. His username is lovingitsideways.

I bought my cossie from ABC motorsport ,guy was honest and decent with me !!

Was honest enough to tell me what cossies in stock had had the rear chassis legs welded etc ,but maybe thats cos i knew what i was looking for anyways !!

My car was the best out there on the market at the time cos believe me i looked at some so called minters/lovely examples ha ha ha fookin shitters and wasted god knows how many hours drivin up and down the country viewing motors

But there always seems to be fantastic motors on here for sale and other boards so just take ur time !!!

I wasnt a member on here when i bought mine and i probs missed out on a few crackers .....ill never know

Good luck

ive just sold a mint one with 12 owners so it is difficult to go on that fact alone.although it did put a couple of people off buying it.it wouldnt put me off personally if the car was right.

In my experience its not at all unusual for any RS car to have had a few owners. Lets face it ,they are bought by people who usually get bored very quickly and just fancy something different.Buy on condition is my advice

lol, i can't believe you've totally changed your mind on the basis how many owners it's had, that got to be up there as one of the daftest reasons not to even look at a car ever.

If it had 20-30 owners then it'd make you think but if it looks tidy enough and drives nice i wouldn't be put off at all, same with service history tbh, ok if i was paying top money i'd want full service history, old mots etc etc but if it drove alright, sounded ok and every looked as it should i wouldn't be put off. I wouldn't be put off with a cat d either assuming everything looked as it should.

i reckon that car looks spot on and well worth the money.
