Default what affects top speed?

somtimes when im doing high speed runs my car wont budge past 120, but other times it wil fly up to 134 and stay at max revs. then some times it wont get past 125 and will still have 1000 rvs to go.

so why does it do it, i was guessin wind direction?? happens in every car i drive.

would depend on where you are, tyre pressure, weight in the car including fuel etc, how polished the paint on the car was, road surface, temperature of the air, lots of things sounds like you need a bigger engine to me how do you no you were doing 134 anyway? did you have some timing gear fitted?

do you hit top speed in 4th or 5th or have you always changed to 5th before the limiter. Also just because you have 1000 revs left dosn't mean your motor has the power to rev to that in a said gear.

the MAIN THING is the tyre presure and if its up or down hill

also a shagged engine will loose power aswell as any loose bushes aswell ive noticed on my bmw,,,,,,,

oh and a fucked alternator will also affect top speed runs

i also find if im driving a car that cant go as fast as i feel it needs to its time to buy a new car

i remember jim used to bang his car off the limiter in 5th gear alot,,,,, he needed a faster car !!!!!

on something slow like a mondeo, its a lot about wind n slope.

i can see 134mph on the clock of my crappy mk2 1.8 mondeo on the right stretch of motorway, but mostly youd be lucky to see 125mph.

either way, thats 5-10mph slower in reality with proper timing equipment.

Wind resistance!!!! The drag is the biggest affect. Two ways to sort it More power and make car more slippery basically...

yeah im using timing gear, and tyres, psi etc are all setup right. just weird the way i can do a few laps and on the straights hit 135 on the clock which timing gear says 128, then when i take a break and come ack it wont go past 120 on the timing gear.

on a really bad day i will hit the limiter in 4th at 110 and shift into 5th and it wont accelerate at all. i have driven a few cas hard and have noticed the top speed can vary in all of them.

yeah, this one does similar speed in 4th with a gear left

sierra was safer... you felt like you were going fast n didnt need to go faster.

Beemer doesnt feel quick till it passes 140 (babanas per hour )

mine's GPS accurate at 100, and 2mph out at 120, so i dont think the clocks are that far out at speed.

still, who cares what speed youre doing... you're too busy SHITTING YOURSELF

air intake temp needs to be taken into consideration aswell , by what is being said the first few runs record the fastest and then it drops , maybe its drawing in warmer air from around the engine bay

Had my M3 evo showing 165 on the clock and 161 GPS. Was actually surprised at how close it was. Also had it off the clock (still in 5th gear) but didnt have GPS with me to see the real speed!

Top speed can be worked out from peak power, drag coefficient and frontal area. Mass doesn't affect top speed, it will just affect how long it takes to get there. Wind resistance and rolling resistance will affect it in real terms as they're in effect increasing drag. Also alot of car may hit top speed on 4th but not 5th due to the gear ratios.

as stated, drag vs thrust, thats all there is to it... Just remember as speed doubles, drag quadrouples , hence why 150MPH is relativley easy, and 200MPH is a bitch
