try an get a pair of molegrips on the shaft, if they are going in the bit dont bother to protect the jaws, but if your reusing them they use a cloth so you dont mark it.

or get a windy gun on the nut

Did my friend a few months ago. The threaded bar that goes through the top nut should have a fitting that take an 8mm (i think) spanner (allen key on standard shocks). You hold that while you loosen the nut- that stops everything just spinning round.

DOH!!! I was going to suggest putting it back on the floor too. A deep 19" spanner if you can get one should do the job.

as its a nyloc nut ,and most probably the nylon part which is stopping it from coming off , dig the nylon bit out ,or even get it hot to melt it....

i see your quandry can you not get something, even some bricks, to prop the end of the strut up against?
that way you can get a bit more pressure on the actual strut to possible get it off?
failing that, use a spanner on the flats to hold it while you undo it

or burn the nylon off the nut, but this takes forever and you could end up overheating the rod

err did you not read all the post?

had no mole grips, just borrowed some for tomorrow, no deep 19 spanner or socket and no on to borrow them off, so will try melting the nylock bit. and using a normal ring spanner tho it don't fit all that well
