I was put under the gas by the dentist when I was about 10 (is that a general anesthetic?) all I remember is counting to 10, getting very dizzy and then waking up with less teeth and feeling groggy.

Ive had it a few times, REALLY affects me, in the way that i dont wake up
Every time they said it seemed like i was gonna stay like that, ie coma.
I remember throwing up the second i wake up every time too.

Tis cool Helen, you literally go out like a light, then wake up what feels like 5 minutes later and its been hours! lol
They keep you rested in hopsital for a few hours after you come round and all you do during this time is fall back in & out of sleep and have conversations that you dont remember
Took me the best part of a full day to fully wake up and get over it, but wasn´t half as scary as I was expecting. Just dont try and drive or anything requiring concentration too soon after.

Ive been under a general anasetic 3 times in the last year or so getting various operations on me arm that i smashed to bits only really had 1 bad experience and that was when i came round just before they took the tube out of my mouth thought i was going to choke they sharp got it out tho, when i came round after my first op i was crying like a little girl was quite embarrasing when i realised what i was doing really as the room was full of young nurses and im 27 but apparantly thats quite common , in all its not bad you dont remember anything once they put the needle in your arm your out a few seconds later i wouldnt worry about it.

Aparently the op will take all of 20 mins or so
And i got Dave on stand by to take me home and look after me, bless him. I think the main parts i'm scared of is the needles and the waking up as Dave aint alowed in recovery room.

The type of general anaesthetic used will depend on the type of operation being carried out and how long you need to be unconscious for. Throughout your operation, an anaesthetist (someone who is trained in giving anaesthetic) will carefully monitor your condition and give you the right amount of anaesthetic to ensure that you don't feel any pain.
Anaesthetics are extremely safe. However, every surgical operation carries a slight risk. In a recent survey it was found that very few people die in under these condition. Those in poor health are more at risk than those who are healthy.
If you have an operation under general anaesthetic, you may have to stay in hospital for at least one night. Before the operation, you may be advised not to eat for some time. This is to ensure that you don't vomit or choke while you are unconscious.
Before having an anaesthetic, your anaesthetist will ask you some questions about your health. It is a good idea to make a list of all the pills, medicines and herbal remedies and supplements that you are taking (prescribed or bought over-the-counter). You should also mention any allergies that you have.
Your anaesthetist will also discuss with you the types of anaesthetics available to you as well as the benefits, any risks and your preferences. S/he will help you decide which anaesthetic is best for you. Nothing will happen to you until you understand and agree to the course of treatment that is planned, and you have the right to refuse any treatment.
To ask people what the experience is like achieves little unless they state what anaesthetic was used and how it was administered.

See this is my problem Dan, i get freaked out quite quickly by stuff like this, and also suffer from Panic Attacks, so i know i'm not going to like anything that goes on.
They also wont let me have Dave there when they put me out or i wake up which is going to freak me out further.

I only felt it in my arm cos he said he´d do it slowly as I was also shitting myself, had never had one before.
Honestly hun, try not to get too worked up over it. When you wake up they do your obs then pretty much take you to a recovery room / ward straight away, so it wont be too long until you see Dave from when you wake up

ill be the same person that'll meet you at the theatre suit doors, ask you your name, date of birth, allergies and the last time you ate and drank, then check you understand what your having done (consent from).
Then to the anaesthetic room, very small needle in the back of your hand (pink or blue colour), then count down time, may feel cold in your hand, but that's it, easy!!

So does that actually work then ?? As been told sometimes it dont
Yes, i know i'm a wimp on this matter pmsl I think its just down to me hating hospitals and needles that makes me so scared.

I love it, last time I woke up in the lift going back up to the recovery ward, gibbering total pish. Wouldn't stop talking about nothing for ages. Then I went through a stage of blacking out and waking up again. The bed always seems dead comfy, and the nurses look so much better

My brothers an anaesthetist and I was shit scared of generals until I spoke to him.... the people doing them are obviously doctors to start with and then all the training and exams they have to do..... you'll be fine!
Mind you, he DOES have some awesome stories about fucking with peoples minds just before they go under

My first experience was a month ago, of course you will be anxious. Just let the nurse know how you are feeling, and don't be embarressed to show your emotion. Even if you cry, no one's going to think anything bad of you.
All i remember feeling was the scratch in the back of the hand, the cold feeling up the arm, which before you realise, you are asleep.
When i came round, i had the shivers, i remember them giving me pain relief and just generally going in and out of sleep.
Keep telling yourself it'll all be over by that evening.
Good luck, you'll be fine.

I was fine when I had it but I understand that everyone is different. I was wide awake straight after and didn't suffer any major side effects. The only thing that happened was that I got the 'shivers' which is apparently normal after an anasthetic.
Don't worry about it too much or you'll panic. I actually totally loved the feeling that I had when I was goin under. I could even feel the coldness of the drugs going up my veins in my arm!!
