What would you do???
The guy i work alongside has just handed his notice in, we have both been here nearly 3 years although i did leave for 6 months and came back.......
Well basically as he travels 80 miles a day when we got a big contract it came with a brand new merc as a thank you from mercedes, which my company gave to him due to his travelling..my boss has just sat me down and asked me to give a commitment that i am not going to be leaving anytime soon etc etc (obviously as i jumped ship once).....now obviously he will be givin the car back and they have said they will be selling it but do you think it would be wrong of me to ask then if i can have it???
Its a 05 plate c220 diesel..top of the range one
Cheers

If you were smart... and if the rest of the 'Yeah have the car' people on this thread just stopped to think for a minute... you'd realise that by taking the car you would be in effect taking a PAY CUT...
Because you would get spanked for Company Car Tax as you are doing no business miles a year and the car is of a high value... Which means you would feel the full weight of the tax man as he splayed your arse cheeks and knocked it into next week.
SO....
Here's what you do...
You say because this chap is leaving and you are obviously going to have to take extra work etc, which isnt a problem as you like the job, which is why you came back. (put a positive spin on you leaving before)
SO... what you would like to propose is a small pay rise, say £3000 pa to cover the extra work, they will be saving on this other blokes salary in the time it take to recruit the blokes replacement so they should be able to afford it. its not going to cost them anything is it.
You then say so that both parties are protected you propose a Loyalty Bonus of say £5,000 which is paid to you after 6 months.
If you leave in that time, you dont get it, if they finish you in the time they pay it.
That way... just around June, when the show season is in full swing you get a nice little bonus to spend on your car
If they arent too keen just point out the hassle and cost of recruiting replacements and the potential loss to the company should you were to get a better offer in the next month or so.
You boss will know you are exploiting the situation slightly... but at least you are lubing up to shag his arse....
Be under no illusion if things were different they would finish you tomorrow....

Although i wouldnt get company car tax as it isnt classed as a company asset, it would be in my name and insured through etc...so the tax isnt a problem. They have already given me a loyalty bonus of £2500 in october and then another in 6months for when i came back they didnt want me leaving again so cant really ask for another one
the only real downside is i WILL be doing 2 peoples work for the time being and will take me ages to train someone to be at a level that is anywhere any near of use to me.so could defo go with that idea and say i would LIKE it not WANT it, so they offer it to me......me not asking for it

company car tax at our place is only paid for by people who have cars allocated to them
if you have a "pool" car you only get taxed the same as if you were using it for business miles only, ie bugger all as you aren't supposed to use it for private mileage, but everyone does
the other thing is that with so many pool cars and pay grades at which you can actually have a car, loads of the office peeps get cars to tool about in anyway and if you take one home after using it for work i don't think it's tha big a deal
my old boss had a thing where he was paying tax on a van, but they gave him a car, and he used it without feeling any pain in his postiriour, in fact he rather liked it as it was much mroe comfortable

People always think they are smart and the Revenue are dumb... but this isnt the case... the Revenue know 98% of the tricks in the book and how to spot them and if you are unfortunate to get caught out then they start looking at back taxes.. and remember they can go back SEVEN years....
For a Director of a company it is more efficient to run a car as their car and claim mileage at the agreed rates, especially if they are doing a decent amount of business miles. (Eg first 10,000 business miles are paid at 40p per mile, 25p thereafter)
However, you cant then put repair bills, tax and insurance through the company.

and seeing as most of them are nursing staff or training for osmething or other it makes sense
obviously this is not the case for all companies but it works for ours, and besides, van tax is free, or £3k per year so you want to get something for your money if you are paying forit don't you
