New car dilmena, input and different views needed please
ok,
bmw is forsale, as it's costing a fortune in petrol over 200 a month
as far as i can see i got two options
option 1, get a pretty nice pug 306 GTI-6 and use it for both work, and track days.
option 2, get a pug 306 hdi version for work and get a £1000 track car, i.e. golf gti, or a pug 205 gti

Trouble is Spiky HDI's are as expensive as 306GTi-6 so would be even more money.
If you can afford it go option with two cars, as easier for track days not smashing up your everyday car But does work out expensive taxing and runing 2 cars.
how many miles u doing, to £200?
I do £120 a month in fuel easy but i suspect im doing more miles than you are on £200

306's are nice car's, not shit your pants scary, and no tourqe steer, turning circle is humerous Rallye is the stripped out light version, good for 15's on 1/4 mile, and not too sad round track.

well, looking at the MPG of town driving for the gti-6,
i'm going to get a D turbo and not the HDI, as i think i'll go for a different option
and get a 306 d turbo and some thing else, maybe a gti-6 for track maybe even the rallye
soo just need to decide what track/weekend toy i want now
i guess it depends on how much i spend on the D turbo

If I was you, i'd get what i've got. Toyota Corolla Levin GT-Apex. (don't laugh, let me tell you why... )
It's a Toyota so they are reliable (although mine isn't ) and quite comfortable. They have a decent spec, air-con and electric sunroof on mine, some have half leather too. They are only a 1.6 so they are pretty cheap to run and you can get good MPG out of one. Also, build quality will be alot better than a Peugeot.
Now the good bits.... mine is a 4 cylinder 4A-GE engine (which is basically a copy of a Ford BDA), mine has a 20 valve head - 5 per cylinder (designed by Yamaha), VVT, individual throttle bodies, short ratio gearbox, lighter and stronger internals than a normal 4A-GE, and the best bit, they rev to 8,400rpm as standard. Toyota quote them at 160bhp and 130ft/lb although they do tend to make a little less power than that as standard.
Mine has Toyota's 'Superstrut Suspension' which is basically like a double wishbone set-up. There are ball joints, links and bushes all over the place. The ride is very hard, you get no bodyroll at all. They have disks all around which seem to be more than good enough.
They really are a screamer of a car, quality engine with the brakes and chassis to match. Your going to think i've over exaggerating, but if your interested, your more than welcome to have a shot of it.
Mine is limited to 120mph (all jap imports are) and it'll hit that in 4th gear. It matched my mates Celica GT-Four ST185 (bigger turbo, FMIC, exhaust, etc but on standard boost) for straight line speed and could easily out handle it.
I'd be confident that a standard GTI-6 wouldn't be quicker around a track. They had a race series in Japan where they were used pretty much standard.
The best part is the price, they are cheap as chips
There is a downside though, prices for parts can be high and pretty much nothing on it is shared with UK cars, except for brake pads (MR2 Turbo on the front and Carina GTI-E on the rear).
This is mine...
There was a nice looking one that recently was on ebay... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...8301&rd=1&rd=1

I wasn't questioning how good a 306 is, more questioning what makes my car "not ideal" for track use, when compared to a 306 GTI-6.
It's technically superior and far more suited to track. Your welcome to drive it if you want, you'd be impressed.
I nearly bought a 306 Rallye, but was put off by the price, insurance and lack of toys.
I suppose it's down to what you like at the end of the day.
Torsion bar and a Citroen BX engine, each to their own...

Team HOTHOT!
200 a MONTH in fuel
In a month, I usually crack about 900 miles, and that costs me the measley sum of £50 - gotta love the deepfat fryer on wheels

Be careful with the Electic windows on the 306 they have a little plastic clip holding them in the top corner that holds it in place when going up and down and they wear and the window drops i had it on mine easy to replace and only £1 odd But a right pain when it drops folward when your out

What's the point of having an out and out "track car" for four or less trackdays a year?
All that stuff about using a car on track on the Sunday, and not being able to use it on the Monday is bollox. Mike R uses a 400bhp Escort Cosworth on 15+ trackdays a year, and drives home from every one.
I bought my MR2 and did 7 trackdays in the year in it, and still used it as a daily driver.
All this "track car" nonsense is getting well out of hand. How many did you do last year?

i did several with the saff, and only one didn't drive home.
although i'm excluding pod from that
only did one this year and drove home, ....lotus
last year 2005 i did 2 i think, but would have done more if the escort had run right.
