Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone know's of anyone managing to install a complete ST170 engine + loom into a MK4 Escort?

I thought it would make a cool project as it's a modern fuel efficient engine in a light bodied MK3/4 so would go well. It would need the original loom + management to make it viable cost wise.. so come on tech boffins is this possible? and will the lump physically go in as easy as the 2l Zetec engine out of the Mondeo?

the management might be a bitch as the alarm is part of the ecu ect i belive

aftermarket is a option but the vvt wouldnt work

but im sure its possible if you had ALL the car loom and modded parts to fit


then you need to think of a way to mate the box with cable operation,,,, again im sure thats possible

My plan was to buy a complete crash damaged ST170 and fit the whole engine + loom, and mate that up with the original 5 speed CVH gearbox. I wasn't sure whether it was possible (within reason) to fit a black top Zetec engine from a modern Ford into an Mk4.. I know the Zetec out a mondeo is supposed to fit quite easily hence why they are popular in ZVH conversion which use the 2l Modeo Zetec bottom end..

I've got a 2.0 zetec from a 1997 Mondeo in my G reg 2dr mk4 - fitted easily - all i did was take all the mondeo mounts off and put a modded cvh back mount on, changed flywheel and clutch to efi cvh stuff and bolted up original mk4 box and then went straight in - not sure about ST170 stuff but it must be possible - there was a white mk2 Fez in Performance Ford not long ago with an ST170 lump in it and the mk2 Fez and mk4 escort are fairly similar to mount engines in?

Thanks chap! I was kinda reverse engineering what I would do with this old XR if I brought it!!! lol. Thought about the Mondeo lump which would be the easier option but I think they are a little flat aren't they, like around the 130bhp mark? I would want to use the original donar car's management to keep the cost down and ensure reliability, like bomb proof track day reliability
