rear sills, rear chasiss legs, smoke from valve stem seals, gearbox noises, and check the viscous coupling in transferbox is working as it should(all four wheels are driven, also avoid 2.8`s they are shite, mechanical injection and type 9 box,ive had about ten 2.9`s inc 24v cosworth v6,and twin turbod 12v v6 and id have another 1 any day of the week great cars...also the very last of them on a k reg came with non adjustable tappets so if it taps a bit on an early 1 it can be fixed very easily

Good cars in my opinion. Look boring as standard but fit an RS or cossie kit and they look good. Also if you want to upgrade its not that hard as you just fit cosworth stuff.

i went to have a look at it - it was on a K, smoked like hell from cold, kept missing at 4k-41/2k and showed signs of having been boiled. so i didn't buy it. shame 'cos it looked really nice!

what ever you dont buy a 2l dohc model

i have one on a k plate and its so boring bring on the snow

2.9 are good engines and very reliable if been treated nice with services, , but dont get one thats a cat equipped car, may aswell have a 2l model, my 2.9 cat was very slow, non cat models just pul and pull, plenty of torque there
dont worry about rattles as they all do it, as you have to manually adjust the tappets

main problem is rust as been mentioned

They are great cars for everyday motoring, nice and lazy to drive with all the torque and none of the worries that come from a Cosworth engine.
The 2.9 is the best engine to have out of all the XR's, they do like to drink the juice though
