Default 4x4 Alternator enquiry?

Mine isn't charging that well Thought it was the battery after the trouble at had at USC but after replacing it but i'm still having problems! Only charing at about 12.2 - 12.5 on SECS now......

Also got a feeling that early 4x4 saffs (Like mine being a 1990) have a different connection to other 4x4s (Please put me wrong if it's incorrect)

Thing is i wouldn't mind a 2nd hand one but whats the guarentee it will be better than the one i've got now! Might look nice n new n charge at the same voltage me current one does....

Prices from fords are probably through the roof, anyone got an idea on how much a reasonable new / 2nd hand changes hands for.

Thanks

I got a 2nd hand 2wd 90 amp unit from Tim Finch, swapped the front pully and it fitted my 4x4 with the polly-vee belt no problems

that was £20 + postage Buy It Now on Tims e-bay auction. Charged at a perfect 14.1 volts when it was installed into the E30 Cosworth Then again, that might of been helped by my perfect re-wire of the starting and charging system using uprated wiring for the job

Also, all connections are the same from memory on the Sapphs

90 amp is the standard rating for a cossie alternator.

the wires I changed are the following ones:

All earthing straps and wires from engine to body and battery
Starter motor to battery main feed
Alternator to battery main feed
Alternator to dashboard "charge light" wire (blue)

Here is a pic of all the wires on the E30. I also did the same on my cossie (see link below for writeup in the tech section)

Well worth doing IMHO and do the fuelpump wiring too if you havn't already
