Default Brake Fluid

Quick question folks
Im not the most technically minded.

The missus has a 54 plate Fiesta which has just covered 12,000 and been in for second service today.

The garage informed her that it had to have the brake fluid changed as it was two years old and wasn't part of the service.

Does brake fluid have to be changed at certain intervals?

Only ask as I have a seat leon also 54 plate thats now done 36,000miles. Its been serviced 3 times and unless they have done it as part of service they have never changed the brake fluid.

Whats the crack and what should it cost to replace?

Thanks

Ben

brake fluid should be changed at certain service intervals as it is hydroscopical, which means it can absorb water, and over a period of time this can cause the internal components of the brake system to corrode ,and can also boil at a lower temp than the brakes operate at!, and cause poor brake performance.

the water can be absorbed through the top of the brake fluid tank ,as it has a vent to atmosphere there so it does not create a vaccum as the fluid drops, but also flexible brake hoses are made of a semi permiable membrane, and water can over time actually be drawn in to the fluid through the hose material.

Different manufacturers/garages really, some say 2 years some say three. Some will check the boiling point on service and if it's below spec advise it.
