Default EVO III - any good?

Thinking of selling the 24v and getting an EVO III. Are they any good?

- How do they rate compared to a cossie?
- How reliable are they?
- How expensive are they to run?
- How easy to work on? / How expensive are parts?

Cheers

They are ok mate - but really i'd save your cash and start with an Evo 5 at earliest...

That was when they started to really become good

I appreciate they were changed over at the IV but i'm really just after a fairly cheap one for a bit of fun. Evo IIIs start at about £3.5 - 4k. I was saving for a 4x4 saph but I'm sick of Fords lack of reliability and well overpriced in my opinion compared to an Evo.

I've always been a Ford man through and through and only ever owned Fords but the fact is they aren't particularly reliable cars. There is always something going wrong with them. I still love cossies but I know there is next to no chance of getting a decent low miler that hasn't been caned. However, there do seem to be a lot of low mileage Evos around for less money than a cossie and the Evo III is 270 bhp as standard. Seems to make sense to me.

But, never driven or owned an Evo - hence my post.

and you think an evo hasn't been spiritedly driven?
maybe an idea to find a forum for them and get any buying info and owner's opinions.

Cheers, already checked out that site. I'm sure any Evo will have been driven hard as well but lots of low mileage ones which must be better than a high mileage cossie.

IMO an Evo3 is worlds away from a 24V saff, soo much fun with a bit more boost n exhaust etc.

Properly accelerate and handle brilliant.

Got a few mates with Evo2s and 3s so been in enough to know.

Great cars for the money. Best for the cash TBH.

Just don't expect it to be any more reliable than a well looked after cossie!

I was highly disappointed at the VIII 260 so you need at least an FQ version.

Some people say the 2-3's are the best as no electronic gismos - personally I find the active YAW amazing

I wouldn't say any of them cheap though (to run, buy etc)
But are they any good? Hell yes!

Never seen a Evo FQ.
A bit more boost, and an exhaust, and they are FQ...

You can really feel the difference between AYC and not AYC cars youve driven then?

I found the 260 exactly what it is, a budget Evo the dash was so plasticky, didn't even feel that quick - but like you say a few mods (which was all the 7 FQ300 had from the box with some posh trim - never been in an 8 FQ version so can't comment) will easily put it over the 300. As above IMO I'd rather an FQ version than the 260 8 (or any of the 6-2's), personal preference from someone who wouldn't/couldn't do a xxxbhp build on one!

You can really feel the difference between AYC and not AYC cars youve driven then?
That a question or a statement? Coming from a S2 RST at the time (even compared to the cossie), err yeah course could feel the difference of AYC (didn't have the scooby then, so no experience of its AWD)

£2.5k?! I'm looking in the wrong places! Cheapest in our area is a 2 up for £3,200 and its a bit of dog and losing water from somewhere (had already had headgasket replaced)
I've never driven any of the early ones, was going to look at a mint III, but everytime phoned the garage it 'wasn't there' and then when popped in on passing one weekend it had been sold

Personally I can't afford the mpg (was one reason the Subaru went) and I suppose unless you could do your own service that would be one cost saving - but I never keep a car long enough to need a service!
I'd love one, but not got the spare cash to have one (unless sold the cossie which would never do and then an Evo would be a weekend car)
