remember when i was at ford pdis were the big money earners. at mercs its either serivces with some nice hit lists all day long or doing big jobs heads, engines, gearboxes etc. pdis seem to take to long, by the time you've checked it over you have to go and wait in parts make the plates yourself. fit the plates, locking bolts mats etc then go and fuel it up on a road test. only time you can make some really good time on one is if you get a tracker to fit aswell.
the new s class you have to plug the machine into it and if you havent checked something on the pdi it will bring up a fault.

yup remember them was an apprentice there just starting out so had no say really. always screwed the plates though, only cos i had a leccy screwdriver

mercs you get 2.1, used to be 2.5 but they cut the time back always give them a good check over though, for the sake of a bit of time saves a lot of shit if something is wrong with the car

the parts master tech at my place is the fucking NUTS, he remembers EVERYTHING and the techs ASK HIM when they cant sort a problem,,,, but hes been in the game for 20 years maybe more as i aint gota clue his age

hes also the most humble person alive who NEVER stops working,,,, hes not a quick worker but he just plods along and gets the job done THEN goes home

hence why he also closes up as he can work till 8pm doing stuff

We only charge £45+vat PH. Must be time to put teh prices up.

The problem with cars nowadays is, just go and stand in teh doorway of you local Main dealer, look around at your ramps, tools, machines, computers and tell me how much you think it may have actually COST to fit it out so teh mechanic can do the job for you.

I bet someone on here could give us a rough price to kit out a BMW workshop with 6 ramps and all the diagnostics, training for techs, receptionists, advertising, etc etc.

These are HUGE costs people, almost unreal when you start getting into it.

Then tell me their labour rate to try and recoup that cost it is over teh top. And yes, i agree technitions are NOT paid enough as its a highly skilled job indeed but sadly the people have all been tarred with the "Greese Monkey" name and image that is oh so hard to shake. I have always hated that stereotype with a passion and always will, and sadly i fear it keeps these lads wages down to an artificial level for teh skills involved.

for head office - where i work in training

Yes they make money at the dealership but it is MANY years before you get a return on your investment.

Most people are too short sighted to understand one simple word in business - OVERHEADS!

It costs a fortune to sell and service cars and most of that has to come from the hourly rate they charge!

You cannot compare how much a business charges per hour to how muc ha single employee gets... EVERYONE and EVERYTHING has to be covered plus profits..

i *think* vospers for charge £40 p/h.

It's interesting that people are saying new fords a arse to work on, i thought it was just me being a spastic
No not at all a level 1 tech has to have all them qualifications before he can even work on a car alone, then the more skills you get the higher you go. ie level 1s do PDIs (pre delivery inspecptions) and that is using a bloody tick sheet and then you work your way up to eventually a diagnostic tech or as some people here have said master tech level which is were the money is.

Also not sure if some people know
You HAVE TO BE AUDI LICENSED before you can even undo a screw on an Audi....each car has its own license too
interesting!

re: the people working for merc, 1.8 hours to do a pdi?! at ford we get 0.75 to do a 64 point check/pdi. Although they're not test-driven/filled with fuel/plates fitted.

LOL! Not far off mate! I have to lend the car to a mate's g/f the night prior to any work being done. She takes it and then drops it there in the morning and gets the train to work. Tuner then stays open late so I can call past mate's g/f's work, pick her up in her car (which she lends me), get to the tuner, collect the car and go home.

Huge effort but really appreciate the efforts of my mate's g/f and the tuner to accomodate
