Self dimming rear view mirror

Can somebody explain how these work, and if they are any good?

i hate them personally, cant tell if the car behinds the plod or not in the dark. They give a sort of green tint, well the ford mondeos do.

i have stuck tape over the sensors before to stop them tinting

Sensor in the unit checks if its nightime/dark.

Then it darkens the mirror as it assumes, they'll be headlights on behind you to reduce dazzling. Its darkened by a LCD segment in front of the mirror normally.

Not crap specifically, its like when you click a normal mirror to the second position to reduce glare.
