Notice how the police car overtakes in forbidden places all the time. First, at a non overtaking zone (close call too). Second, non overtaking zone before a crest. Third, overtaking while getting on coming traffic. Fourth, non overtaking zone before a crest again.....and it still couldnt keep up.

One of my sisters friends has had a Lotus Carlton from new, i remember back in about 1992 ish when i had a 2.8i Capri & this guy had just bought a 3dr cossie for a play thing & let me take the cossie out, cossie was standard & was knocking like fook (piston slap) but compared to my Capri it felt awesome & i loved it. He then took me out in the Carlton but would'nt let me drive that, at the time i remember thinking that the Carlton felt way way faster than the cossie but the cossie was standard. He still has it now & its only done about 25k, he has other cars that are far superior now , has one of those Bentley coupe turbo things(like Beckham) but he says he will never sell the Carlton. At my sisters wedding i remember them having to push the carlton to get it started as it did'nt like being left on a slope, would'nt start for some reason he said it costs a fortune to maintain it
To sum up i have always liked the Carlton & would love to buy one but i never would due to reliabilty issues & parts, i'm sure an E39 M5 for around 12k would walk all over a Lotus Carlton in handling & is just as quick & more reliable, i know their much more common & just do'nt have the looks of the Carlton but an M5 is my choice, just wish i had enough money to buy a Carlton as well ! Awesome cars.
Simon.

I'm sure I saw a birght Red one (like RST) one morning, either that or it was a very good replica!

I went for a job interview at Lotus when I was 16 (16 years ago!!! ) and on a tour of the factory I got to see the part where the Lotus Carlton's were being put together. It was a small'ish hanger type building and outside was a line of standard Carlton's awaiting treatment and were driven in a couple at a time. The standard Carlton's had obviously been bought from Vauxhall with things like bumpers etc not fitted as they weren't needed by Lotus.

The Lotus Carlton was quicker
from 0-100
over a standing 1/4
over a standing km
and top speed.
I don't know what an E39 M5 would do unrestricted though.
The Lotus weighed a 100kg less and was more economical according to their test results.
The LC Autocar tested also seemed a slower example than the one Performance Car tested at roughly the same time.
Maybe there are faster examples of the E39 M5 around as well
