Not the right forum but...

Looking at a Golf GTI 16V in abit, need a sporty car for about 6 months or so.

My mate had a mk2 valver as his first car, other than a bit of surface rust around the tailgate it was solid. it didnt experience any reliability probs.

i've seen examples that have run for over 250'000miles, you can pick them up dirt cheap. i would have one as a cheap daily. the engines can be prone to dropping a little oil but they are still very reliable. try and go for a late spec car H or J and you'll get pas and elec windows. not sure which of the earlier models had those. dont think the 8v is not worth a look though, still an excellent car.

check out edition38 forum for more detailed info

suspension is very sloppy though easily rectified with a decent setup, tend to have problems with idling too on the mk3's, iacv seems to knacker very fast

Yeah, but the Mk2 valve is far better than the Mk3 - what the man says is 100% spot on

Yip there is no other option for a MK3 m8.You say u want a car for a few months thats safe for your son and with a bit of poke well u aint gonna find that in any other Mk3 other than VR but it aint a cheap run around trust me!! also a MK3 is worse for rot than the MK 2 believe it or not.The tailgat's are bad,the back arches rot like a saph!! and dont even get onto the subject of the damn floors.Trust me when i tell you this,if you seriosly want a safe car for you the misses and the lil nipper and a cheap run around with a bit of poke go for a late spec 16 valver or even the torque 8v.More ridged car so its safer and has actually got power under the hood more than a shitty MK3 lawnmower.Go to http://www.edition38.com/forums/index.php?act=idx and ask there or even just join and have a read of some of the MK3 sections and u'll find out i aint bullshittin u m8
