Yeh good idea. Start off wanting an A4 - 4 door saloon with plenty of room and a big lazy diesel engine to a Golf - 3-5door hatchback with a smaller more potent engine.

The cars are in now way comparable.

All depends what you want in a car. I have an Ibiza TDi Cupra, but I'm lookjing for an A4.

The Ibiza is good, and I wont be getting rid, but I need the boot space of the bigger car.

Golf and A4 are worlds apart IMO

I agree entirely, If you need an A4 sized car then have a look at a Passat you'll get either a newer or better spec'd car for the same coin.

Can't go wrong with an A4 mate. I got a petrol on ethe other year after the missus banned me from getting a Focus because I started muttering Focus RS bumpers .

Superb cars, very well built and carry a degree of prestige

I have a 99 Golf Gt tdi , with the 110 bhp engine (Which I believe is the same as some of the A4s)....it has done over 205K and all that has gone wrong was a £100 sensor!!! I would definately recommend ANY car with that engine in it.

Oh, and it still does 45-50 mpg

Nah i think Audi A4 And Golf are very similar apart from the slightly larger boot than the golf. Although the newer A4s are alot bigger but i was thinking of the older shape A4 (P reg?). My mum has a Golf GT Tdi which i have been using for the past week as my car is in the garage. I hope my car never comes back out of the garage because the Golf is so fun to drive. Its the higher spec Gt Tdi so its 150 bhp me thinks. Its very fast and still does 40-50 mpg easily! I would definetely recommend one of these. But the Audis are also quality cars!

We've got both Passets and A4 Estates at work most of them are on an 03 plate, the Passets nomally have something wrong with them whereas the A4's seem to keep going. My bosses A4 does about 400miles on one tank of diesel.

The A4's are very well built especially compared to my mates X reg Golf which seems to have bits of interior trim that randomly fall of.
