Default whats the score with potholes / sunk drains + damage to car.

basically on the way to work this morning at 4.15am, if any of you know the biggin hill area you will understand where i am, basically as your beside the airport which will be on your left and heading towards westerham you come to a large roundabout, turn left and your in the airport or go straight on towards westerham.

so i go straight on and there are 2 drain covers in the road, both of them have sunk into the ground by about 3 or 4 inches and i went over one this morning, since my steering has been pulling to the left slightly and my tyre has a slight puncture- 215-40-17 are not cheap i know they are there but they have got worse over the past 4 days since i havent been at work.

so whats the score? write to the council which i am planning to do and they have to inspect my car for visable damage? never had anything to do with the council- all i know is they rip you off for yearly council tax.

im sure this has happened to one of you so please advise.

been there, done that

first things first, pictures
as many as you like
make sure you have something you can use as a frame of reference though to indicate how big the depressions are inthe road, a newspaper normally makes an ideal reference point as they are all basicly the same size (red tops anyway) and any indications as to where about they are on the road, street furniture, lines on the road, junctions etc

then take pics of the damage to the car, again use something to give a frame of reference, this time though use a ruller 6 inch for the smaller ones and 12 inch for the larger
doesn't matter if you can't see the makring on the ruler, it's just there to show the damage

once you have photographic evidence you can then find out who is in charge of the road maintenance for that particular road (which is why it's important to make sure you have an exact location)

go to the council and ask to see someone there in regards to a pot hole that has damaged your vehilce

they will give you a letter/form/filling in slip/inccident record or the like that you will need to put in with all your pictures etc

once they have agreed that the damage is the fault of the hole in the road they will ask you to provide a recipt (proper one not made up down the road sort) for the remidial work you have done to fix your car

they will then put that forward to their insururs who will pay out

one thing to cinsider is that they will not care if you have insured your car for Ł30k and it's only an escort, they will pay out book price if you make a claim for more than the vehicle is worth

my claim was for Ł2300 and they said my car was worth Ł199 - 2 worn tyres which they deducted Ł100 for

i got it fixed for a lot less than that but i had to show the proper bill of getting everything done, perhaps someone who is friendly will sort you out with a recipt for this? just rememebr that it's not a quote they will be asking for, it's a recipt for work that has been carried out to repair your motor and that you have piad for (you need to provide proof of this too, even if it means paying them with a cc and then them reimbursing you 2 monutes later)

they have a set budget for this sort of thing and roads are inspected frombetween once a month to once a year depending on how busy they are
