I'm starting to price up engine work for next year. Going to stg3 is obviously the cheapest option for a reliable 350-360, but from previous posts a genuine 400+ is in apparently in a different league(i haven't been in either yet). Ignoring the need for the uprate transmission as thats been covered, what is required from a pure engine point of view:
LC pistons
Head work - to what degree????
Cams?
Turbo (I take it my t3/4 will complain at this level)
RS500 style I/C (i have the std i/c and C/C with upgrade kit at the moment is the limit of this stg 3?)
Injectors
MAP sensor
Chip suitably mapped
New ancillaries such as oil and water pump, fuel pump, pressure reg.
Anything else? I'm assuming crank, rods etc will be OK.
Car already runs a breather.

Paul, its impossible to answer really as its totally budget dependant. However as a price guide complete 400+bhp engines start from around £5k upwards depending on just how wild a spec you want to go, and of course what donar parts/engine/turbo you have in the first place.

My personal liking at the moment would be std bottom end, stage 1 ported head, mild cams, greys, t34 hybrid (or t4?) and the usual ancilliaries.
I think that would make a nice low lag 400bhp (ish) engine!

so would'nt that be the min engine spec required to achieve 400 bhp?
std head,
std comp,
must be great condition engine,
t4, (dont know about spec)
intercooler,
cams ,
grays
and shit loads of psi
have to say. from what i have seen on this board, and had a read of karls and stus work is rated and respected. For this conversion i would go only to them.

Phil the engine you've listed won't make 400bhp.
JRST yes you could call that the minimum spec, BUT not everyone wants a T4, and is of course dependant upon you having a very low mile standard engine which is rare these days. If the engines being pulled apart anyway I always recommend going low comp.
